So, my computer dilemna.

My computer is broken.

I can spend $300 repairing my iBook but it's already a 4 y/o computer. Is it worth putting $300 into a computer of that age?

On the other hand, I'm looking at a minimum of $900-$1000 to buy a new MacBook (assuming that I can find one from macmall.com- they have overstock of the MacBooks that are one generation older than the brand new ones being sold.)

I definately need a laptop since we no longer have the space for a desk/computer in the house. And I definatly need a Mac (we have thousands of dollars worth of Apple software.)

So, WWYD? Spend the $300 to get the old one fixed or get a new one (which will mean waiting several weeks until I can come up with the money)?

  • This is just a curious question.. why would you buy another macbook if the one you have is broken? I tend to look elsewhere when products fail me.

(not trying to be snarky.. just an honest question). Good luck in your search tho if that's what you'd like to purchase (I wouldn't put the money into the old one).

  • I'd suck it up and get the new one :)

  • The last three PCs I've had (Dell, Toshiba and Gateway) have also all broken. Of them all, the Mac lasted me the longest. Plus there's the fact we have all of the software already- dh is a graphic designer and it's pretty standard to use a Mac in that line of work. If he's going to be on a Mac it's easiest for me to use the same so that we can share software and swap files more easily. I've been doing more photography lately and so it really just makes sense to keep with using a Mac.
  • One criteria for me would be how long the $300 repair would last.  Is it something that is likely to happen in another 3 months?  Or is it a more permanent fix?  If it was more permanent, I'd shell out the $300.  If it is something that will break again and again, I'd save for the new computer.

If I remember right- her DH does graphic designing or something-- I know they do a lot of art stuff. MAC's are the best/have the best software for that...

Cleo-- Get a new one... if you can afford it. It'll be better and last longer, the old one my get fixed and then something else might break... :)
