Sounds like it was a suprise, so being totally unprepared would suck.  But, it happens.  Both my brother and I were born that way...my mom used self-hypnosis.

Edited: Sounds like hers was very traumatic and that her drugs didn't work.  My mom actually chose to have an unmedicated c-section (she had an iv just in case they had to put her under), and said she really felt no pain, just lots of pressure.  Poor girl!

Why would you not let them knock you out?????  My epi didn't take on one side of my body and by the time the got me to the OR for my c-sec I could feel contrax in my back (I was on pitocin, it was awful).  I seriously considered letting them knock me out, but then the last bolus finally took and lasted until almost the end of my c-sec (I only felt burning, not pain).  I would have never chosen to stay awake if the pain block didn't work.  Never!

She actually chose to stay awake because she wanted to BF.  I'm sitting here contemplating that.  She regrets that decision, and I'm wondering if in the moment she wasn't thinking clearly.  Wow ...

It's more common than people know.  I started screaming the second the started cutting.  I ended up being sedated after I was screaming that they were stabbing me and was bawling.  I still have nightmares.

Didn't read the story yet, but I had my epi wear off on one side halfway through my c-section.  I didn't feel them cutting, but I did feel them pushing my uterus back inside.
