When do they hold their own bottles?

Anyway to encourage this?  Max esp. has great control and should be able to do this but doesn't want to.  They both grab for the bottle when I'm about to feed them but then just lie there happy to be fed.  I'm just thinking this would certainly change my world :)

Re: When do they hold their own bottles?

  • I know a lot of babies that do it as early as 6 months.  My girls didn't do it until 10 months.  They technically could before that, but refused.

  • Heh, my little Natalie balls her fists up and sticks them under her bottle to prop it up. I'm willing to bet $100 that Audrey will NEVER want to hold hers and will always want to be fed.

  • I'm not sure, but I can't wait for the day!!  But then I guess it is on to solids when we'll have to spoon feed :)
  • My daughter just started holding her bottle within the past week or so.  She just didn't get it.  She'd look at the bottle and cry but then throw her arms back instead of grabbing it.  She finally got it though.  We would put it in her hands and help her bring it to her mouth.  She's got it now but I still have to hold her....she doesn't have the right tilt on it yet to get all the milk.
  • Oh I remember my life changing the moment they both held their own bottles. It was a beautiful day! I don't remember exactly when it was, but I remember feeding time getting a lof easier.

  • When they want to! Sorry, but they are usually ready to anywhere from 5-7 months. Mine refused to hold bottles EVER. We refused to hold sippies or "big girl cups" as we called them or I'm sure they would have wanted us to do that for them. We tried propping, we tried just not holding them and they would simply not drink...now I could have taken the hard approach and simply waited till they got hungry/thirsty enough - because they would have..but we were having issues with needing them to gain weight so I couldn't afford to. Good Luck!!!
  • I'm still waiting.

They *can* hold their bottles now, but they start screwing around with them and playing instead of eating, so we still hold their bottles for them.

  • when CAN they or when DO they??

Mine wouldn't hold their own bottles until they were around 1 yo...lazy slugs. ??
