Poll: BFing- How long is too long?

I was lurking over on 0-6 months this morning and saw a few moms that are still BFing their 2+ year olds.  I understand it's a choice, I just know for me that is much longer than I would BF for.

What's the longest you'd BF for?

I think 1 year is where I would stop BFing.  Maybe I'd continue to pump longer than that but I would like to have my boobs to myself again after BFing that long.

My goal is 6-9 months.  I would consider BFing up to a year if it seemed to be working out well for myself and the baby.  I do not think I would BF after a year.

Once the babe can talk, I'm going to have trouble continuing.  But who knows?  Definitely 2 years would be the ultimate cutoff for me!

If I were only having one baby my goal was 6 months.  And to be honest with you I was not looking forward to it at all.  Since I'm having two and will not have DH here to help at first I've decided that my sanity is more important to my children's health, and I'm going to FF from the beginning.  DH backs me 110% on that decision.

i'm thinking a year.. at that point they are old enough to eat what we are eating for the most part and whole milk is safe

We weaned our DS to milk at 1 year (per the pediatrician's advice) - so my answer would be sometime before 15 months of age.

Anything past 2 years old is just weird to me.

If the child is in school, that is too long (thinking about those shows that showcase women that breastfeed their 12 yr olds).

For me, somewhere around 1 yr will be the cutoff.  We will see when it happens.

DS weaned himself down to 1X before bed from 15-18 months (from 12-15 months he was down to just morning and night) and then stopped cold turkey one night.  I wasn't uncomfortable with it and he pretty much decided himself when to stop.

I'm going to have issues once he has teeth, so a year max.  If he's one of those early teethers, he's getting bottles of pumped milk.

I can easily see 15-18 months, but I think that is my upper limit.

A year sounds good to me too..  then with the possibility of pumping after that...  but I guess we'll see when that time gets here...

I would say a year. There was a post a couple weeks ago about this- look on youtube and search for the breastfeeding 8 year old. It was uber disturbing!

DH's Aunt bf his cousin until he was 4.

She said he wouldn't drink regular milk.

I'm thinking as soon as they have teeth, im pumping, maybe even before.

If my child can unbutton my shirt and say booby it's too old for BF.

I'm going to try for 9 months to a year, but since I'll have to pump for a lot of that since I'll be working, I don't know how well it will work out. 

And I agree that when the kid is old enough to ask, the kid is too old.  And ditto again to the "ouch" when I think about teeth being involved.

ben was down to morning and night around 14 months, and while away for thanksgiving, we just sort of faded it out.. at just about 16 months. Pretty stress free for both of us.

My husband and I agree that neither of us is comfortable with it past 1 year. I think it depends on the child and the mother.

My mom BFed my brother until 2, and I knew a woman when I was younger who BF her children until 6. It worked for them, but personaly I wouldn't feel comfortable with it.

I knew someone who BF her 5 year old... it was at a daycare where I worked and she would pick hum up and BF before taking him home. GROSS!

If they're old enough to ask for it, they're to old?! I don't get that ignorant logic.  a lot of babies can sign for it pretty early on...

good luck to some of your babies..this is a pretty sad post.

I was/am planning on child led weaning and am hoping she'll be done much sooner than that.

I think your opinion is apt to change a lot once you actually have a baby.  I know a lot of my ideas about parenting have changed a lot.
