Doula Recommendations?

Did anyone use a doula for their birth?  Recommendations in Philly?  If you don't mind sharing, how much did it cost?

I looked at the DONA website, but it just lists names & phone numbers with no other info.

    She was our doula last week and she was amazing. She has many different packages. We choose the full package with private birth classes and lactation consult for about $1000.?

    Of course I am very clueless...so please don't mind me if I sound silly... but what is doula and what does she do?
