Giving 6 mo old a bagel or toast?

We had our 6 month check with the pedi yesterday and some of the info the doctor gave us said you can give a baby Lily's age a bagel or toast -- that they like to chew on it because it helps with teething, and that it is something new to eat. Do you do this?

  • I have not given DD any kind of bread but I also don't know what age you are supposed to start.

  • Sophie is just starting solids, and she hasn't really learned what to do with food yet.  I'd be afraid of choking.  I did buy her some arrowroot biscuits for when she's ready, but my husband ate them all. Indifferent

  • I haven't given E anything like this yet.  She doesn't like to munch on broken up O's.

  • we've given toast, pancakes, little bits of our rolls at dinner, tortilla
  • I bought the teething biscuit and she loves them, but they make such a mess.  I only give them to her before bath time, otherwise too hard to clean her up.
  • We did that with DS.  We would give him bread like when we went out to eat and at home he would get some bagels.  We did this until he learned how to take big bites out of it and now we just give him little pieces at a time to eat vs chew on.

  • No I have only given her baby food and cereal.  I would be afraid of her choking if I gave her toast or a bagel.

  • We didn't, but she wasn't teething yet at that age either.  When she was, we used biter biscuits and zwieback toast, but that's just us.

I'm too worried to give her things like this right now also.  She's just eating baby food.

  • I think it's fine so long as the baby is supervised. If you've ever given a baby that age a piece of bread, all they do is gum it and get it really soggy with drool. It doesn't actually usually end up getting eaten. I also think it is a good thing to do when everyone is around the table eating. I know my baby feels left out and wants some food, too. Giving her a toy just doesn't cut it. She's almost 7 mos, BTW.
