Using dresser as changing table

I want to use the top of our dresser in the nursery as a changing table, but I'm not sure if I should or not because it doesn't have rails or anything.  Without the rails it seems a little unsafe.  Does anyone do this?

Re: Using dresser as changing table

  • Once your baby can roll over a changing table is unsafe too. Don't worry about it.

  • get one of those changine pads that has raised sides, put it on a slid proof mat and most of them come with buckles. BOOM problem solved, cause rails or not, you dont walk away from a child on the table so they'll be safe.
  • We use DS's dresser as a changing table and it's not a problem.  You're always standing right there in front of the kid, so as long as you pay attention s/he's not going to roll off.  Changing pads have a slight incline to them, too, to help keep baby in place.

This is what we did with our first DD and it worked great!  I plan on doing it again with DD #2.

  • I was wondering the same thing! thanks for asking bc i really like the dresser we picked out and thought it would be good for a changing table too.... and it seems like an actual changing table would be just extra furniture in the room.
  • ::Slapping my forehead thinking why didn't I think of that::

Good idea...I knew I would never walk away from baby while on the table/dresser, but I didn't even think of using one of the pads with the raised sides.  Thanks!

  • I have a dresser/changing table, but you would never know it is a changing table. There are no sides. You don't usually leave the child on teh changing table unattended so it should be fine I think!

The only reason its on my mind is I just registered for one! LOL

  • We've always used DS's Munire dresser/changing table for diaper changes.  Of course, I NEVER leave him unattended, but it's been completely sturdy and safe.

We did the same thing.  No problem at all.  We will do it again with #2.

  • I agree with the PPs, even on a changing table the rails aren't high and you can't walk away from them, so I see no difference.  In hindsight, I wish we would have gone with a dresser/ changing table combo like you're talking about, because after a year, the changing table is useless and just collects dust in the attic.
