Eggnog

Ok, so I don't drink alcoholic eggnog, but every holiday season, I LOVE buying reduced fat eggnog at my grocery store.  They are all pasteurized (one even is "ultra-pasteurized"--whatever that means!), but they all also contain eggs.  I'm so sad about no creamy, spicy, cold eggnog.  But it's more than worth the sacrifice for my little one!

EDIT: Thanks for your help, ladies.  My Google search (which I do always do before posting a question, thank you very much, snarky ones) did not turn up this information.

Re: Eggnog

  • From google: Commercially prepared eggnog is made from pasteurized eggs, therefore it is safe for pregnant women. Homemade eggnog made with raw eggs is not safe, as it can contain salmonella.

right...exactly what PP said, it is pasteurized and therefore ok.

  • ...... and I'm the one getting 30 pages of snark Confused
  • "Made from eggs" is not the same as "contains raw eggs". If it's pasteurized, you're good! At least that's what my doctor said, and we all know that every doc is different.

  • I GOOGLED (which is your friend) eggnog and pregnancy:

And for FUN, I GOOGLED (again, your friend and highly recommended) pasteurization:

  • I thought the uncooked egg was unsafe, regardless of the pasteurization?  But thanks for the tip--my Google search did not turn up this tidbit...maybe I will have some this season!

  • I love the Silk Soy Nog - it's healthier (at least less unhealthy), much lower in fat, and DELICIOUS!  It tastes just like regular eggnog, but lighter (so you can drink more without getting full).  And, it has no eggs in it.

But the eggs AREN'T uncooked in store-bought. They're cooked.

From google: Pasteurization- liquids such as milk could be heated to a temperature slightly below boiling and held there for a set amount of time to eliminate the most harmful bacteria.

Essentially it is cooking the eggs.

This sounds delicious, where'd you get it?  I haven't seen it before.

  • I've seen the Silk kind at Target, though I didn't care for it too much myself.  It was okay, but not as creamy, or something -- I had it last year and don't remember exactly why I liked it less.
  • I'm actually relieved to read this... last week I drank a lot of pasteurized eggnog (I was at my parents) and when I got home my DH told me it is not good for the baby because of the eggs. I feel better now :)

I live in upstate New York (near Buffalo) and our big grocery chain here is Wegmans - they carry the Silk Soy Nog in the organic/alternative foods section (but it's only available in November and December).  I don't know if Wegmans is in Michigan, but if your stores have a specialty foods section, they may have it.  I also saw it in a Walmart Superstore once - it was right in the dairy section with the regular eggnog.  Good luck - I hope you can find it because it is my favorite holiday beverage!!

Exactly -- sort of.  The pasteurization process subjects the raw eggs to a lot of heat, which is what kills the bacteria.  So any dangerous bacteria in teh raw eggs should be eliminated during the pasteurization process.  This is also why bottled unrefridgerated caesar salad dressing (also pasteurized) is fine while fresh-made restaurant kind is not so hot due to the raw (unpasteurized) egg content.
