Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Circumcision Question

We went to our 1 year check up today and our doctor told us we had to pull the skin back, something about a ridge and getting the skin past it. He pulled the skin back and some yellow stuff came out which he said was normal and then he told me to work the skin like a zipper starting from the part where the yellow stuff came out. I was a bit embarassed and thought my husband would know what he is talking about so I didn't ask any question but my husband is also clueless. can someone help explain what it is I am supposed to be doing and why I have to do it?

Re: Circumcision Question

  • I posted this last night, but will post again.  My DS is circ'd.  I didn't do anything after his 2 month check-up b/c I thought by that time everything would be healed and noone ever said anything.  Well, at his 4 month check-up he had a penile adhesion that had to be fixed (I actually switched pedi's over this b/c she did the procedure with no warning).  It wasn't bad for him, but tramautic for me.

Anyway--now I pull back his penis gently so that you can see the red rim of his circumcision every diaper change to avoid it getting stuck again.  Another good time to do it is during bathtime.  Also, I still put on vaseline at least once a day to the area to make sure it doesn't get sticky again.

I had an experience like musicmaker's but it was around 4.5 months and my husband noticed that it looked weird. At the next pedi appt. she pulled the skin back, it bled a little, but DS got over it pretty quickly. The pedi told us to continue pulling the skin back and to put on bacitracin (sp?) after every diaper change until it wasn't as red. We did it for about a week and I still pull the skin back 2-3 times a day and if I think it looks weird I put on some vaseline.

     HTH

  • The same thing happened to DS at his 4 month appointment.  You have to pull the skin back completely so that you can see the entire top of his penis.  Here's some more info:

  • I did not know we were supposed to do anything to the penis. I am freaking out now. DS is almost 11 months and I have never pulled the skin back and I am not sure exactly what I am supposed to do. If I do find stuff or it looks irriated should I take him in to be seen or just clean it with antibiotic? The thought never crossed my mind.

  • DS's penis is always hiding so we have to pull the skin back every diaper change.
  • my ped explained it to me this way: around 2000, they started doing what he terms "designer circs" or a 2/3 circumcision. they do not remove the entire foreskin like they used to, a la daddy's penis if circumcised. my husband freaked when he saw dek's and was obsessed with it until his 2 month checkup when my ped explained and then pulled it back down. the adhesions grow back very easily, and will continue to do so until the baby is about 2 years old when enough pulling should have convinced the skin to stay down and become outside skin instead of trying to readhere.he suggests doing it once a week.

if my next baby is a boy, i will be making sure to ask for the traditional circumcision to aviod this in the future. it is torture having to tear his skin every once in awhile when they grow back!

  • OK. this is freaking me out since my next child is a boy.  I feel so clueless.
  • I am seriously freaking out. I am terrified of having to pull the skin back if his has reattached. Which from what I have read on it so far is likely. I am glad this post was made becuase I had no idea that this was even a concern.

Once you know about it, it isn't really that big of a deal.  Just pull the foreskin back and clean it out at least once a day, and it should be fine.

You can also elect to not have the circ. at all, then you don't have to worry about it.

  • YIKES!

I know I'll get flamed, but this is part of the reason I did not have Ethan circ'd. Sounds kind of traumatic to me.

What do you use to clean it with. just soap and water or are you using something else?

  • I clean it with soap and water in the bathtub.  The warm water softens the skin up some, so it doesn't seem to bother DS at all.  It also helps with cleaning out the dead skin that can get trapped in there.

I've also used wipes before, but that doesn't work as well.

  • dont' get freaked out. It seems like it's happened to most of us with boys. At DS' 6 mo. appt. the pedi pulled it back and DS was upset, but he got over it in about 2 mins. I do it at home, and noticed one that the skin had started growing back and it 'ripped' it back when I pulled it. Traumatic for me, but DS only got upset for a minute or two. Now it kind of worries me, but I just try to keep it clean and make sure it's not growing back. Just check on it once a day when changing him, and I'd ask pedi to make sure it's ok at checkups. I think keeping it clean and pulled back is the most important- and even if DS gets a little upset, it's better than having to have the circ done again at the hospital (this happened to a friend of mine).
