Tell me about Eczema

Anyone with a kid with eczema?  I'm thinking Julia might have it.  She just gets dry patches on her skin -- arms and legs especially - ALL the time.  They even get all scabby sometimes.  (they never bleed or anything, but do get scabby after just being a dry patch at times.)

SO, is this excema? if so, what do i do about it?  we put on baby oil after baths right now, but that doesn't seem to do anything.  (unless they're better than they would be without the baby oil!  eek!)

and, yeah, I'll ask the pedi about it soon -- we'll be going in 2 weeks.  Just thought I'd ask those with experience.

Re: Tell me about Eczema

  • It sounds like excema.  DS had it and the pedi told us to just use a lot of baby lotion on him when he came out of the bath and his skin was still moist.  It did the trick after about 2 weeks it was much better, but I think he had a pretty mild case.

  • It does sound like eczema.  You can used 1% hydrocortisone cream 2x per day for 7 days on the spots where she is broken out.  That will usually clear it up, especially once it starts to get scabby.  Limit baths and keep the water warm but not hot.  Immediately after she gets out, dry her off and apply moisturizing cream.  We used Aveeno and have had good results.  (The cream is better than the lotion.)
  • Eczema is an allergic disease so your best bet is to find the cause. It can be a food sensitivity or it can be environmental. Certain things will aggravate it (hot water, dry skin, low humidity, non-natural fibers) and some things will improve the condition (moisturising, steroid creams) but if you can get to the root of it your LO will be better off.

I've battled eczema my entire life so I'm unfortunately too familiar with it. :(
