Burping from a cold?

Is this common?  I am trying to figure out what is wrong with my DS - he has been burping for three weeks or so - it started about a week after he got a cold, the same day he was diagnosed with an ear infection.  But it hasn't stopped.  He got another cold after the first one, and I think also a stomach bug, so maybe it's just too much going on at once.

He says the burps hurt - I feel bad for him.

Re: Burping from a cold?

  • Extra mucus in his tummy from the cold etc could be giving him heartburn because his tummy is fuller than normal.  Heartburn can feel painful or burning, awful feeling.

  • It sounds like reflux to me, which might be caused by his illnesses.

DD had reflux as a baby and went of medication around 1-year-old. Yet now whenever she gets sick, her reflux seems to come back. She doesn't sleep well (even after her cold is gone, her reflux seems bad for another week or so), her appetite goes down and she's always burping (she burps in 3s--1 regular burp, followed by two that are like hiccups and that is usually the reflux). DD is 4 and we've been using children's Tums or Pepto Bismol for her since she was 2 to help when she gets sick and we notice her reflux acting up.

Poor kiddo--I hope he feels better soon!

  • Maybe he is swallowing a lot of air if he has coughing fits or it he  is breathing through his mouth. I know when my son has a coughing fit he burps (usually right in the middle of it!) and then cries. Poor guy.
  • heyitsme - that actually sounds like DS.  I made an appt with a pediatric GI doc next week just to have him checked out.  He was on Prevacid as a baby, but has really been symptom-free for a long time.  He is taking Children's Tums now to relieve some of his symptoms.  He threw up twice in the past couple of weeks also - both times were when he was asleep.

Thanks for the info - I've been so confused about this.  His Ped was clueless.
