Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Starting solids ?

My DS is 6 months old, has been an EBF baby and now we are trying to start solids. We have tried cereal and on the first day he took a few bites and the second day one bite, then the third day refused to open his mouth for the spoon. We have also tried bananas and he took a bite on the first day and then pretty much since then refuses to open for the spoon.

Any tips or should we just wait a week or so and try again? I'm not going to make him open his mouth for the spoon so I guess that's about the only option. He likes the spoon with nothing on it and will play with it, put in his mouth all day long. But if it has food on it, right now he doesn't seem interested although he grabs for my cereal or oatmeal in the morning. This is my first baby so not sure what is normal for starting solids.

Thanks!

  • My DD is doing the exact same thing. The first day she was a little interested, as in she actually opened her mouth... but since then she has just gotten instantly fussy and clamps her moth shut and squirms away. I've tried bananas, peas, apples, and sweet potato in addition to rice cereal. All the same response. I would have given up but my pedi is pressuring me to get some extra calories in her because she is slightly underweight for her growth curve. I think she just doesn't want it right now.
