Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How do I introduce table foods?

I know this may be a stupid or silly question, but I am so confused about this.  I see that a lot of 9+ month babies are already eating table foods.  What should I start with?  Should I just give DS a little of what I am having?  What about meats?  TIA, this is so confusing!

Re: How do I introduce table foods?

  • I would get some of those mesh feeders (they have them at BRU or online) so you can be sure that the baby isn't ingesting anything large enough for them to choke on.

I would start by giving DC a few bites of what you're having IF it's something relatively simple, mushy and with few ingredients so you can isolate a food allergy if it pops up.

  • Do you mean table foods or solids?  I don't think the mesh feeder would be appropriate for table food b/c the point is to get them to feed themselves, right?  I'm just not a fan of the mesh feeder except for teething anyway.

I just break up some bits of things and put them on DS's high chair tray.  For instance, last night I shredded up some leftover turkey and gave it to him to feed himself.

  • I should say that DS has had turkey and chicken in purees before, so it wasn't a new food.
  • Thank you so much Descanso, that is very helpful!  I will try some leftover turkey tonight.
  • My son is 9 months old and when we eat a wholesome meal (meat, potatoes, vegetables), then he too, will eat those. I am not one that is afraid of seasonings (I give him his portion before I add salt and pepper though..). If I am eating something that can be broken into small bite-size (tiny!) pieces like turkey, ham, pancakes, cheese, etc. then I give it to him. He is a really good eater though. He isn't afraid of textures and doesn't have any problem chewing, etc. I would really go with how your baby responds to food! I think it is fun to give DS a variety of food! I like to see him respond to various textures and flavors.
