So the early blood testing available to us slightly geriatric ladies…

Can they all be done starting at 10 weeks? How long does it take to get results? Are there any significant differences among the different brands/tests?

I know that whichever one my midwife or insurance covers is what I will get but I'm trying to learn a bit, mostly about the timing. I know I will be so tempted to tell our toddler daughter after our 8 week ultrasound but I know I should wait so I am trying to figure out when I will be able to take the fast and get the results.

I read over here and on the test websites that 10w is the earliest time they can be done, but then when it came to scheduling, my doc's office wouldn't do it earlier than 11w, I suspect it is because it guarantees that there will be more fetal DNA in your blood, and better chance of definitive results. I think it all depends on your doc's office. As for the differences between tests, based on all the research I did, there is really do difference betw Harmony, Mat21, Panorama, etc. They all look for the same thing. Your insurance or your doc's office may determine which one you do. I kept hearing here about Mat21, but then my doc's office offered Harmony, so we did that. Same result. Good luck!

I remember you from when I was PG with with DD#2.

I wasn't able to do any of my testing until 12 weeks.  I think my insurance is a little different though.

GL in holding that news in it's not easy (and congratulations on your PG)!

My doc offers the Mat21, but he won't do it before 11 weeks.  He's also going to do the NT scan at the same visit.

My OB suggested Mat21 last year and said he can do it at 10 weeks.  My question is whether I can get it at 10 or not because that's when my RE is graduating me.  If she does the blood draw will they send the resutls to us directly? To my OB? To her and she'll have to call us?  Or will I have to wait until my 12 week with my OB?

Well you wait for the results about 2 weeks anyway so you prob wouldn't hear back before 12w anyway. Whoever the lab/office is that does the test, will call you with results.

I had my MaterniT21 about two weeks ago at 10 weeks 4 days.  My results came back fast in 5 business days and the genetic counselor in MFM is who called me with the results.  The results were of course added to my chart so my doctor mentioned them at my 12 week appointment last week but all of the logistics were handled through the genetic counselor.

Thank you for all of the responses. Keeping the secret is going to be hard. Hoping that I can find out by 12 weeks because I would like to be able to share the news on Thanksgiving, but this is on the list of things I can't control so we shall just have to wait and see.

I did Panarama at 12 weeks with an inconclusive result and had to resubmit at almost 14 weeks.  Still waiting on second result.

We did Verifi at 10 weeks and one day - no problems with inconclusive results.

Received an inclusive result with Panorama, as well. Just had blood redrawn so more waiting. Afraid the 2nd round will be inconclusive. The lab tech said it's pretty common which would have been nice to know originally!

I had the harmony test done at 11 weeks two days. The genetics counselor called and said I had "no results "so I am taking the test again tomorrow. I am curious to know about people that that this has happened to and what their results were after the redraw of the blood work?. I tend to find people that I also have inconclusive results but they don't seem to post the second round of results can anyone share their updates? Did you get results the second time around or were they also inconclusive. My fear is that if I get inconclusive results of second time that means I'm higher risk for genetic complications

I had the Mat21 test at 11 weeks, along with the NT Ultrasound.  We told our daughter (4yrs old) after the NT scan by showing her the ultrasound videos.  We got Mat21 results back in 8 business days (almost 2 full weeks) after the blood draw.  We spread the news about the pregnancy, to friends/extended family, after the results and did a gender reveal that was quite fun. It would be so fun to do that at Thanksgiving dinner!!

They say you can do it at 10 weeks and I'm sure alot of people get conclusive results or they wouldn't say it can be done that early.  My doc wouldn't do it until 11 weeks tho and the waiting is killer, I know!

One piece of advice, make sure it's covered and what your out of pocket will be for the test.  I was covered, due to my age, and Sequemom Labs are In-Network for BCBS but my portion is still $823.50.  On a good note, they will work out a payment plan if I choose to do so.

Good luck to you!!  It's such a long waiting game but when the time comes to spread the news, it will be an exciting and rewarding time! :)

I did the Verifi at 12 weeks and results took 1 week. Verifi is the most accurate of the NIPT according to the genetic counselor. Something like 99.97% accurate at detecting ds.

@jenswiss I just got the call yesterday.  Everything came back low risk, less than 1:10,000 for any of the trisomy conditions.  I'm very happy the second test was able to be read.

I did M21 at 10 weeks exactly, I had an appointment that day so my doctor said while 10 weeks is normally the minimum, she'd just have the blood draw done and the worst that would happen is that it would come back inconclusive and I would have to do it again.  Sequenom sent the results to my OB and my OB called - the results were back in about 8 business days but my OB's office reviews everything and calls patients so they were backed-up that week and I had to wait a bit longer.  I had then before my NT at 13 weeks (OB does since NT can provide information M21 does not).  It was nice to actually have the results before, since they are more accurate than NT I went to my NT not worried about the genetic parts (unlike with my first where I was so anxious over it).  Sequenom (the lab that that developed the test) will not give results directly to patients (I tried during the extra days waiting for OB to call me).

Also, to echo pp - when you check with your insurance, don't only inquire as to whether the test is covered, ask if the actual Lab is covered/in-network.  I ran into a situation where Cigna told me twice that all these tests were covered under my plan for AMA (M21, Panorama, etc.).  My doc does M21 so I did that one.  Well it was denied because Cigna isn't in-network with Sequenom (makes no sense to say a test is covered but the ONLY lab that developed the test is not).  It was a appealed and later covered, but initially I got hit with a 2K plus bill and it was a PIA to deal with the paper work.

@lizzyrae78 Just received word that my second Panorama test was inconclusive as well. Very frustrating but my doctor reassured me that this doesn't mean something is wrong it just happens sometimes. Because I wasn't confident I was going to get a result, I went ahead and had the NT scan and first trimester bloodwork last week which all came back great. So I’m feeling good and won’t have my blood drawn for a third time. Hope you've had better luck with the Harmony test!

Is it required that we have all of this additional testing?  I know some of this stuff was offered with both of my previous pregnancies and I have opted to have it. Once you're AMA, do they require it? That stuff all makes me so nervous on top of being super nervous because of my loss history.

JenSwiss. It's so frustrating. I have not heard back yet from my second draw of the harmony test. Keeping my fingers crossed I was diagnosed as a type one diabetic during my pregnancy at six weeks. First-time mom. I'm at 14 weeks now. So this is been a real emotional roller coaster for me. Not getting test results for something like genetic testing has really been another hard blow for me to try and deal with. I could really use some good news right about now. And I'm quite tired of being "a special case". We're supposed to be having a quad scan in the second trimester and also a 2t? ultrasound by my perinatologist which it will look for all the details fingers crossed that everything goes okay congratulations to you and your good news

@niknak1208‌ Nothing is required, regardless of age. This is all optional and personally I loved the additional knowledge and comfort ot offered.
Of course if you refused all types of testing, not sure what your provider would say, they may refuse care maybe. But I'm sure that's not wht you were saying. :)

Is this a fairly new test? I don't remember having it with my last baby, he's now 3. I am now considered to be "slightly geriatic" too.....will be 38 when I deliver. What is this test? What does it look for? Thanks
  • Options
Correct. I didn't refuse all testing. But some I did refuse. I treated with RE's when TTC for my son and after our late loss. I obviously did all of that diagnostic testing. I treated with my regular OB with my son and my high risk docs with my daughter because she was following my late loss. I never had anyone refuse care. I can't even remember the tests I refused but I know there were a couple. I always felt like knowing my risk level for downs for example.. Really does me no good. It would make me insane with worry over something I had zero control over. I know I refused that one. We were always so low risk to begin with.

I just wasn't sure if there were tests that they do solely because if AMA.
