We took LO in for her 1 year checkup yesterday, along with 3 shots and a blood draw. A little after we got home I got a call from the doctors office saying LO's white blood cell count is elevated and they want us to come back in Friday for a recheck
. They mentioned that it could simply be because she was so upset but didn't mention anything else, just that they wanted to recheck. Has anyone else had this happen? Did you get any answers? Was it just because LO was so upset?
She was very upset as we had to wait almost an hour and a half to see the doctor since they were running behind due to an emergency. She was very antsy and just wanted to run around and play plus on the verge of hungry (for more then the cheerios and applesauce I had with us ). She also had to have 3 shots before we went to the lab for the blood draw, which they had to try both arms because they couldn't get the vein in the first arm
. Hopefully it was just due to being upset but I'm leary about how they can determine it's just because of that, I mean what LO is not upset with a blood draw etc.?
Anyways no real real point to this thread, just wondering if anyone else had this happen and what were the end results.
UPDATE :
We took LO in for the scheduled redraw but the laboratory was not successful. The only one able to draw blood was not experienced in babies so they asked us to come back on Monday when someone will be there who is experienced with drawing blood from babies. I did ask them about the finger or heel prick and they told me that it was something they just don't do at their office. Which I do remember when LO was just a few days old we had to bring her back up to the hospital to have a heel prick done to check her jaundice level. Sometimes I wish we would have picked a pediatrician's office instead of our family doctor
. Anyways I will update everyone on Monday (hopefully).
Re: White Blood Cell Count UPDATE
ETA : Did all your LO's have a blood draw at the 1 year checkup?

My LO had a heel prick at her 1 yr appt and her hemoglobin was low (9.9 and they want it over 11) so I had to take her to the lab to get bloodwork. Haven't gotten the results yet.

Thank you for all your responses, I'll keep everyone posted. I hope to have results tomorrow night or on saturday (thank god for the doctor's night and weekend hours! ).
An hour later Erin was eating the band aid so I took it off and it was still slightly bleeding. I put a very small band aid (it was all I had) on it and an hour later it had stopped bleeding.
