I went and saw the OB today about the weird cycles that I have been having. I've had 4 cycles since June 9th with the longest cycle being 17 days and each one having a week or more of bleeding. I think the doctor summed it up best when he said "that does not sound like fun."
Which I think he should serve to his patients because he definitely made me want to go get a drink.
So, he tells me that he does not think I'm ovulating and that, because I'm not ovulating, that my body is not producing progesterone - which is why I'm having all of the crazy short cycles. He then told me he had two treatment options 1) do biopsy of my uterine lining today and put me on provera, or 2) put me on provera and have me come back in 8 weeks to do the biopsy.
Okay. Let's see. You want me to take provera to jump start a cycle while I'm currently on a cycle? In the hopes that this will make me have regular cycles?
He then says he wants to do option 2 (why did you tell me about 1) without any explanation of why. I asked what the biopsy of my lining was for - he said to check for pre-cancerous cells.
I've had more hormone fertility treatment cycles than I have fingers (and I have all ten) and fall into an increased risk factor which I'm now displaying symptoms for that risk. When I told him, I think maybe we should go with #1 instead of waiting, especially since I'm sitting here right now, he tells me "well, that is the gold standard of treatment" and walks out of the room to get the nurse.
And the "gold standard" is supposed to make me think this is something that should not be done? Still confused.
He is the doctor and I want to trust him, but . . . this is also the doctor that told me to pray and take prenatals. I know take a regular multi-vitamin and supplement with extra folic acid.
So, he did the biopsy and scheduled me for an u/s in two weeks. I'm to take provera for ten days. And then expect my period again a few days later (which makes perfect sense since I went in for having periods every two weeks and we are now going to medically induce a period to start in two weeks . . . ).
I said as much to the doctor. He did not appreciate my sarcasm as evidenced by his offer to give me a 3 week RX for provera. I said no.
So, for the ladies who have taken provera - what time do you recommend? I can't decide if I should start it tonight and take it after dinner or wait until the morning.
I'm so sorry bug. Good for you for pushing for the biopsy. I hope you get good answers soon. I'm sorry I don't have provera experience. It may be the one fertility med I haven't been on.
Any thoughts about switching docs? Yanno, to one who doesn't prescribe prayer?

Wtf. I am starting to question whether we can really trust doctors to have our best interest in mind. The whole process is exhausting. And full of second guessing. I am sorry. I love you. I also apologize for not asking sooner. I knew you had this appointment today. My head was in my ass.
It's scary, isn't it? The amount of stories I've heard about stupid doctors (including my own OB) is crazy.
I'm sorry, bugg. I have no experience with provera, but good for you for speaking up and questioning him.

Bug is right @snegde. However, that didn't stop me from googling... and then giggling.
@LizBlue - yes, another doctor is on the agenda but I did not think I would need to find one this quickly after his wonderful advice in April. Ugh. I only went back to him when I realized that I would have called my old OB after the start of cycle #3. Right now, he has some knowledge of my medical history but I definitely do not trust him.
@MyFirstRaspberry - night makes sense and that was what I was leaning towards. At least the provera insert does say that it is used for cases like mine so I know he is not 100% in left field on this.
I'm not sure I understand your RE's reasoning at all. Maybe this is from my lack of knowledge about Provera, but I thought it was supposed to bring on your period... Anyways, from my experience taking it (to start a period), I just always took it at night. I'm so glad you pushed for the biopsy though...even if it doesn't show anything, I know I would have regretted not knowing. So sorry you're going through this hun!

wow. this whole thing sounds crazy. i'm so sorry you're dealing with this. as far as your provera question, I took it once in the past. when i stopped taking birth control, i didn't have AF for like 80 days or something, so i took provera to end the cycle. the first dose i took was at 5 pm, and then i subsequently took a 2 hour nap. oops! after that i took it before bed. much better!
