Re: ~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~ 11/11

  • 1.  I'm getting lax on my label reading and trying to avoid cross contamination from my other kids. And I think I'm getting mastitis again.  DS is doing well.  My slip ups don't seem to be causing him much pain or distress, but he's got an awful bumpy rash on his chin and neck.  I don't know if it's from what I'm eating, what he's eating, or just from teething.

    2.  I haven't though this far ahead.  We're a pretty basic veggie and potato with soy/dairy free butter substitute or rice family.  Cranberry sauce is diary and soy free.  :D

    3. I have two questions.

a.I'm wondering how many of the kids who are MSPI also had foremilk/hindmilk issues or tongue tie.  DS was tongue tied, which led to a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance.

    b. Did your LO run into issues starting solids?  DS has that rash on his neck, and it's everywhere food gets, but it's also everywhere drool gets.  He's really only had oatmeal, the 5 basic veggies, pears, apples, and prunes.  I've cut out fruit until I get to see his pedi tomorrow.

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? Me: definitely better than last week! Spent the weekend at my ILS in Ohio and they took great care of me, h, and LO. She's seems to be improving and her disposition is much sunnier since meds and dairy free almost 2 weeks ago. Last night she slept on me as usual bc I was too tired to fight it but the night before we started trying to get her to sleep in the rnp, not on my chest and I got a 3 hour stretch at the longest point... Otherwise only 45 min usually.

    2. For week 2 of our holiday recipe series, let's share some MSPI-friendly side dishes. From the primal palate again: crispy hashnrowns cooked in duck fat- https://www.primalpalate.com/recipe/crispy-hash-browns/

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? @ceefome how does the tie issues relate to milk imbalances ?

  • @AFwifelife That is a bummer that your mom isn't more supportive. I don't think people realize how difficult this diet is, and many people are so attached to their holiday food traditions... but really, asking you to prepare not one, but TWO versions of everything! Geez.

@Ceefome I also had a forceful letdown and oversupply, so I think that was part of the problem. My LO's symptoms did not completely improve when I corrected the OS, though. He's not tongue-tied. He has had a lot of other food sensitivies since introducing solids. He gets a rash on his face and diaper rash, sometimes it will spread to his neck and chest. I've been introducing foods very gradually so I can watch for reactions and try to avoid the foods that irritate him. We did end up seeing an allergist but so far the results are negative, so I think he's just a sensitive boy and hopefully he outgrows it.

@Earlybird725 That is so nice to have a comrade IRL! I find myself getting grumpier around the holidays, especially at gatherings where I can't eat anything, so I know how nice it is to have choices!

@jpryber0528 I'm glad you are doing better, and I hope your DD's sleep continues to improve. My DS was (still is) a very wakeful baby too, so I know how hard it is. Make sure you take care of yourself! There's a reason sleep deprivation is used as a torture device...

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? I'm not sure why, but I've been having a hard time lately. Just grumpy and taking it out on DH. MSPI-wise though, we are fine. Except I think the fresh ginger I used in a couple recipes last week gave DS a rashy face and bum, so that's something else to avoid.

    2. For week 2 of our holiday recipe series, let's share some MSPI-friendly side dishes. I'm all about simple side dishes - last year I just sauteed some green beans in olive oil (if I was feeling more ambitious I would have topped them with some toasted pecans), and roasted some potatoes and yams.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? We should get the last of the allergy test results this week (chickpea). Looking forward to talking to the doctor about it. Question: do any of your LO's have "allergic shiners"? (Dark circles under the eys due to nasal congestion/allergies.) I've always had dark circles under my eyes but it's just because my skin is thin and you can see my veins. DS sometimes gets them so I think it's more likely related to allergies, or maybe just congestion from teething?

  • 1. We are doing alright. I'm good at avoiding dairy and soy... But it seems most people are incompetent at reading labels. It's frustrating!! (My mil made brownies which were okay... But then slathered them in frosting which wasn't! :/ ) who frosts brownies anyways?!

    2. I don't have any recipes to share.. We are pretty non traditional though and I'll likely have to bring my own food to gatherings. Which is fine, I usually prefer my own cooking!

    3. No burning questions.

@rocknrollfriend I haven't heard of shiners... But I've always had dark circles under my eyes and have horrible allergies! Interesting.

Let us know what you find out!

@jprybear058 due to the tongue tie, he wasn't nursing efficiently, he was basically just catching the milk. Due to that, he wasn't getting much fatty milk because he really wasn't pulling it out of the glands and ducts. At least, that is how the LC I saw explained it to me.

And today we found out the rash is yeast. Thankfully no thrush.

    1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?  I'm doing ok.  I am learning how to navigate a nonsoy diet on top of nondairy.

    2. For week 2 of our holiday recipe series, let's share some MSPI-friendly side dishes.  I just bought a cookbook that i'm trying out called :"What's to Eat?" and seeing what I can find to make.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?  nothing right now.

    Hi all,
I'm not on very often, but saw this post and thought I would share participate.

I have three kids and my LO has reflux and they think a milk / soy allergy.  He was just tested today.  I am currently on a nondairy and soy diet. .
  • @rissa06 Welcome! How old is your littlest?

@YellowLily2013 I feel your pain.. my DH still brings home non-MSPI friendly food for me and DS, after more than a year on the diet!

  • a d1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? We are okay

    2. For week 2 of our holiday recipe series, let's share some MSPI-friendly side dishes. I make mashed potatoes and just sub almond milk for milk and earth balance for butter.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?
I've been missing having pumpkin lattes at coffee shops so I decided to try to make my own. I have an espresso machine but I'm sure you could use really strong coffee too. I put almond milk and a scoop of pumpkin pie filling in a pot and stir until it is warm then pour it into the mug of espresso. I think it tastes even better than Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts bc it doesn't taste fake. I use the pumpkin filling in the can made by Libby's bc it already has cinnamon or whatever spices but I don't remember if it has any soy oil since we avoid soy protein specifically. However I'm sure you could use just the plain pumpkin filling and add cinnamon, nutmeg or whatever.

@rocknrollfriend my DH also brings home stuff that isn't safe for us. Most recently he was all excited to bring home "dairy free" frozen pancakes and I checked the ingredients and they had egg which DS is allergic to. He also brought home candy corn for me that had egg whites. AND he let DS eat a turkey burger at a diner last week without asking the ingredients. I don't understand why he is so lax!

  • The not reading labels thing really gets me. I'll give my extended family members a pass (my dad bought frozen Salisbury steak and was surprised when there was soy in it, because he never thought to read the label.  Apparently he doesn't understand what goes into processed foods.) My DH is severely lactose intolerant, so the no dairy thing hasn't been that much of an adjustment in our house, but when he brings home stuff with milk or whey in it, I want to hit him, since he can't eat it, either.

  • I don't know what is about the husbands either! You'd think they would have learned by now...
  • @rocknrolfriend thanks. He is 3.5 months old...almost 16 weeks.
