Re: ~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~ 10/28

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? We're doing fine!

    2. What are you doing for Halloween? Making any MSPI-friendly treats? Our office is having a potluck and I was planning on bringing this vegan pumpkin corn bread: https://alteredplates.blogspot.com/2009/11/vegan-pumpkin-cornbread.html and possibly these pumpkin bean bars: https://happyherbivore.com/recipe/low-fat-pumpkin-bean-bars/. We'll take DS trick or treating also but DH will get all the candy. :)

    3. Any burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? Let's talk about Thanksgiving recipes next week!

    1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? We're doing good, I think.

    2. What are you doing for Halloween? Making any MSPI-friendly treats? My kids are either too old or too young for trick or treating so we're going to do the local Down Syndrome group's Trunk or Treat and decorate the car and hand out candy.

    3. Any burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? Talk to me about substitutes for the favorite holiday/winter fare (i.e. eggnog and hot chocolate)

  • @AFwifelife Welcome! I'm glad to hear your LO is doing better. Congestion was one of the symptoms that improved in my DS after I cut out dairy, and he also was gaining weight fine.

It is really hard to relax when you're worrying about everything you eat - we've all been there! For now, you could keep a food/symptom journal, but wait a few weeks before cutting anything else out, since it can take several (3-5) weeks for dairy and soy to clear both your systems. (Some moms whose LOs have more severe symptoms might go on a total elimination diet right off the bat, but it sounds like your LO isn't doing too bad, and those diets are really, really hard.) Another thing to do in the meantime is make sure you're not still ingesting any hidden dairy or soy (e.g. vitamin E, caramel coloring, natural flavors), so if you do get to 5 weeks and your LO is still having symptoms, you can be sure it's because of something else in your diet. HTH, GL!

  • @PipSqueak0313 We have talked about holiday recipes in the past (check out the October and December 2012 posts on mspimoms.blogspot.com - sorry the link in my siggy doesn't work!), and I was planning on bringing it up again this year! I don't have an eggnog recipe but I have been able to find dairy and soy free cocoa in the store, and mixed that with some sugar and rice milk to make my own hot chocolate. I also pinned this recipe for chocolate syrup: https://www.annies-eats.com/2011/12/07/diy-chocolate-syrup/ but I haven't tried it yet.

@rocknrollfriend Thanks! I started a food/symptom log this morning.  I've been trying really hard to keep all the hidden sources out of my diet for now.  It has been a bit of a challenge though living in a small town with no health food stores :(.  I haven't eliminated soybean oil yet.
DS was pretty sensitive and I was still able to eat things containing soybean oil and soy lecithin.  The way it was explained to me is it's the protein that affects them, not the fat in soy, which is why those two items are typically OK.

Have you seen this site yet:

You could also try ordering things off Amazon since you aren't close to any stores that have what you are looking for.  I always ordered my milk on there (oat milk) also they have the Enjoy Life products available.

Oh and Oreos are vegan :)
  • 1. We're doing well 2. No plans. Just handing out candy to the neighborhood kids. 3. Is it safe to assume that foods with a U or Pareve on the label are dairy free? I've gone by those signs when grocery shopping but always wonder if that's ok. Some of those foods still have natural flavors/flavoring listed as ingredients. What do you ladies do? Also, I've read many times on message boards that Oreos are safe. Why is there a D listed in the front of the package if they are dairy free? I've had a package of Oreos in my pantry for months but have been nervous to try them bc of that D!
  • 1. DS is still teething badly with his canines which is messing up his sleep. I got a clogged duct from staying at work 1.5 hr longer than usual on Fri. I feel like someone punched me in the breast! And I have a milk blister!
    2. We are going trick or treating but like someone else said DH will be having most of the treats.
    3. Question- is there a substitute for eggs when baking that has worked for anyone? DS is allergic to eggs. Someone told me Knox gelatin but I've tried it and it didn't work for me. Thanks.

  • @AnnP84 I just avoid anything with natural flavors, unless it specifically says it is dairy, soy, and wheat free. I have tried to call a few companies to ask what their natural flavors are derived from and usually I get the "it's proprietary information and we have to disclose all allergens by law" run around, and I'm too paranoid to trust that answer. I don't know what the letters on the packages mean.

@brideinsummer04 I've used flax eggs (1 Tbs flax meal + 3 Tbs water, let sit a few minutes) in some quick breads and muffins with success. I just made a chia pudding last night and those little seeds gel up much more than the flax meal! So chia eggs might work too.

From as much information as I could obtain the 'D' listed signifies that the product either does or might contain dairy.  So in other words it may run on the same lines as products that contain dairy, thus perhaps containing trace amounts of dairy.  When I first went on the diet I didn't consume anything with the 'D' label.  For example there were some cookies I enjoyed, that had the 'D', but was also labeled as 'vegan', so I wouldn't eat those.  After talking to son's pedi she said most babies are not that sensitive, so even if there is a trace amount that wouldn't be enough to cause a reaction.  After I head that I just went by the ingredients listed, DS was pretty sensitive and I never had a problem.  You have to make your own decision on this of course, but that's what worked for us.

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?

We're doing ok. We've been on the no egg, soy or dairy diet a few months now but our little guy is still very gassy with a bloated stomach and constipation followed by mucusy stools (sorry for the tmi). i'm running on empty today since last night we had the double wammy of bad GERD, causing him to gulp while feeding and grimacing as he swallows which makes nursing super slow, and gas/bloat, causing him to scream when he wasn't trying to eat.

    2. What are you doing for Halloween? Making any MSPI-friendly treats?

We're giving out "allergy friendly snacks" of popcorn and pretzels this year. We found little individual bags of each that were vegan and soy free (and on sale).

We went to a Halloween potluck party over the weekend that had a few MSPI diet friendly options. We brought baked apples (apples baked with coconut oil, brown sugar and GF oats) and roasted squash.  Another mom brought soy, egg and dairy free pumpkin cookies. He sent me home with the leftovers and recipe. My friend brought a vegan butternutsquash chili that was amazing.

    3. Any burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?

Someone mentioned to me today that our gas/ bloat issue could be a fore milk/ hind milk issue. Anyone have any experience with that?

  • @komurphy Poor baby. :( Have you considered cutting something else outof your diet?

Do you have an oversupply or forceful letdown? If you have oversupply your DS might be getting too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk, which can cause similar symptoms to MSPI (gas, green stools). Here's a link that talks about it and what you can do:

  • rocknrollfriend, thank you for the link. I'm going to read up on it tonight. My dr had me cut gluten out first thing since celiac disease runs in my family (i don't have it). But it didn't change anything.  For a few weeks after I cut out diary, eggs and soy he was much better but it's not so much anymore.

I did had an over supply at first when DS was in the NICU but I worked with our NICU lactation consultant and my supply is mostly ok now. I'm going to talk to his ped. and our lac. consultant about the over supply and for milk/ hind milk issue to see if that could be our problem.

  • @komurphy, hmm, that's curious that he was doing better for awhile. Did you start eating anything different? Switch vitamins or medications, or start giving him some supplements or something? I even stopped using my chapstick because it had vit E in it...
  • Thanks earlybird and rocknrollfriend. I'll look into those!

  • I think it's great that there is this thread! I need to get on board. My baby is six months and still reacts to dairy.

    1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?

I'm doing ok, but craving a big glass milk!

    2. What are you doing for Halloween? Making any MSPI-friendly treats?

Nope, just doing the usual and trying to stay away from the chocolate.

    3. Any burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?

    Not right now...

  • @brideinsummer04 Another egg substitute you could try is applesauce. 1/4 cup = 1 egg. I use the unsweetened kind. Works great!

My mom and the IL's are coming over tonight and we're getting pizza. (Papa John's without cheese). :) Then we'll go trick or treating. DH will get all the candy, the lucky duck. ;)

  • @brideinsummer04 The egg replacer we use is chia seeds (1 tsp of chia seeds soaked in 3 tsp of water). Let them soak for at least 15 minutes so they can jell.

This time of the year I like to use pureed pumpkin as my egg replacer. We bake a lot of pumpkin cookies and pumpkin breads.
