Reflux - GI Specialist?

DS is 6.5 months adjusted (8 mo. actual) and still has terrible reflux. He's generally a happy spitter; he's been on Prevacid since his EDD. He just spits up ridiculous amounts, and it hasn't eased up. His pedi suggested seeing a G.I. specialist to make sure there wasn't anything else going on. H and I are on the fence about it. We know that reflux is a common ailment for preemies that they generally grow out of, but of course, we don't want to miss anything that can be treated. We'd just rather not subject him to unnecessary tests (we did an abdominal u/s and a separate pyloric stenosis u/s back in January). We're just not sure what to do at this point.

Any insight from those with previous reflux experience would be appreciated!

    I would see the GI. We took our youngest twin to one for a few visits. The GI doctor had more extensive knowledge of reflux and preemie issues so he was able to tweak the meds to get the perfect outcome a lot easier than our pedi. He didn't ask for any additional testing other than what you have already mentioned.

    When we brought our little guy home he started projectile vomiting and refused eating. I freaked. Ended up being reflux so we did lots of little things to help keep food down and he also sees a chiropractor regularly. We have never had to put him on meds for it. I personally think the chiro is what does it. If we go 2 weeks without a visit he will start to spit up a lot and eat less. Every single time we leave the office he eats a huge bottle with great burps and no spit up. It's something to consider. I know not everyone is a fan but it has helped us a lot and kept us from having any medication.

    I actually just started taking him to a chiro a couple of weeks ago. H is very much against it, but I'm willing to try anything. So far, no change, but I'm going to be patient. Thanks for the suggestion!

    I don't want to freak you out, but my LO was having some issues, so they did an upper GI and found that my LO's intestines were starting to twist (malrotation).  So they did a surgery to get them straightened back out.  My LO ended up not having a full malrotation, but enough that tweaking needed to be done.  
    Welcomed our baby boy Henry on March 15, 2013 (7 weeks early!)

    Sorry for the late reply, but DS had mild silent reflux. He wasn't responding to Zantac so our ped sent us to a GI. It turned out his dosage was just way too low, but like the others said, he was more knowledgeable about reflux in general. He didn't order any tests in case.

    We see a GI specialist. He ordered an upper GI. The test wasn't as bad as I thogught it would be. I feel better knowing that their isn't anything structurally that looks off. Our GI seems to be more on top of dosage issues and changes than our ped was because depending on the med, some of them are more weight sensitive. So my vote is for a GI Specialist just to have a 2nd opinion.
