I think it is just okay. I don't think it is horrible and I know a few men named Mack (not short for anything). However, it does seem dated. The men I know are older gentlemen.
I do believe that it is a nn for Magnus...which is kind of a heavy name in my opinion but not terrible.
I only find Mack acceptable on people with a Mc- LN who end up with it as a NN. Otherwise no.
A for real question - does "Mack" have the same derogatory connotations for the Scottish that "Mick" does for the Irish? I've never heard it used in the same way, but when you bring it up as a nickname for the last name it makes me wonder. Anyone know?
To answer the original question - I think Mack is a fabulous nickname, but I feel like it needs something more for a formal name. And while Jerome Bettis might not mind being referred to as "The Bus" a sensitive, overweight kid might not appreciate the "Mack Truck" references.
