Often Anna's first syllable rhymes with can and tan while Ana's first syllable is pronounced like the word on. I've heard both spellings pronounced both ways but the reverse seems less common
This is what I thought. I like the shortened version a little better, but prefer the pronunciation of Anna like can or tan.
I don't think you can just use the Ana spelling but say it's pronounced like Anna. Well, I mean people can do whatever they want but I feel like it's disrespectful to the other languages and culture. Ana is a different name from Anna.
I prefer Anna but if you want the Ana pronunciation then you need to use the Ana spelling (and vice versa).
I have never heard the on-uh... My MIL is called Ana and it's said exactly the same as Anna
ETA: My MIL is Salvadorean so speaks Spanish. She is Ana and even gets called Annie (I don't think she would spell it that way that's the way everyone says it)

this is how i would pronounce as well in english
I've heard both spellings pronounced both ways. To me though, I would thing Anna is like can "an" Ana is like "on."
This.
This. And I don't think it's personal preference. I think it's a matter of language. Ana is used in these languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Slovene, Bulgarian, Romanian, Croatian, Serbian, Macedonian, Georgian and it's pronounced On-uh or using BTN pronunciation guide, Ah-na.
