Uncircumcised question

To all the mommas with uncircumcised boys (or anyone who wants to chime in!), I have a question.

In all the baby books I have read, it says not to retract the foreskin until he is much older, that it could cause infection, be painful, etc. But my pediatrician and my MIL  down here both say that I should move it down a little bit each time I bathe him. I?m not sure who to listen to or what?s correct. Maybe it?s a cultural thing since I live in Mexico and all the books I?ve read are from the US?

What have you been told about this or what have you heard? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks! :-)

We were told by the hospital nurses and the pedi not to touch it till he's older, 2ish I think, when it starts to retract on its own. I'm not even sure how you'd move it - mostly I try to keep the little bugger covered - he's a pro shot already!

I've been told to leave it alone until it can retract on its own.  My pedi retracts it a teeny bit to check it during check ups, but that's it.

Nope, no retracting at all. Wash his penis just as you would wash his fingers--using a cloth, gently wipe it from base to tip. Don't attempt to retract his foreskin to clean underneath...before separation it?s self-cleaning. :)

Don't touch till he's 3+yrs old.  Of course wash it but don't push back the skin.

Your pedi and MIL are wrong on this one.  It's out-dated advice.  Like douching, lol.

The penis is self-cleaning, just like the vagina.  You don't have to clean up inside a little girl, it would be (obviously) harmful.  Little boys are the same.  I promise, he'll play with it plenty as he gets older and won't mind spending some extra time on his penis in the shower.  :)

I haven't been told anything from my Ped yet, but I have also read not to do anything with the foreskin until he's older.  I have an appointment on Friday with the Ped and I can ask then.
