Well I am currently 38 weeks and 3 days pregnant. At my weekly appt. ( June 2nd) the dr did an exam and told me that i was dialated to 3. But two weeks prior to this exam she did another one and my cervics was still thick and nowhere close to dialation at all. Isnt this kinda fast to dialate. Does this mean that my little one is comming sooner than expected. Your experiance on this topic would be quite appreciated.
I was dilated 1cm and 80% effaced for 3 weeks before I was induced at 40w5d. There really is no way of knowing. Some women have no progress whatsoever and go into labor early and some are walking time bombs and have to be induced late...
Things could change in the matter of a day. I went from nothing to 9 cm in a few hours. Everyone is different. You could be at 3 for a while or tonight could be the night!
It could be faster or longer I believe..I mean I think I heard you can be 0 and nothing going on then go into labor same day then be at 3 for weeks..
When I went into the hospital I was only 1.5cm dilated (water broke) they said I had to have pitocin because natural dilation could be days or weeks..And they didnt have the time to see..
With DD I was dialated to a 3 for nearly 8 wks. With DS I was dialed to a 2 from 34 wks to 39 wks. When I went into the hospital for my induction at 39 wks 4 days I was dialated to a 5. It really means nothing at all.
I went from 4cm to 9.5cm in 15 hours. Everyone is different like PPs said. If it helps once contrax started and I knew I was 4cm I got on my birthing ball and starting bouncing like a lunatic. From 35w to about 39w I was stuck at just 2.5cm.

I didn't dilate AT ALL before going into labor. I was bummed b/c I was set to be induced the next week. Then...BAM...in labor and it went super fast!
When I arrived at the hospital in labor (contrax 3 minutes apart) I was dilated ZERO! 20 minutes later I was dilated to 1cm, then my water broke 10 minutes later and I was dilated to 3. About 30 minutes later I was dilated to six and by the time I got my epi I was dilated to 9cm!
My first internal was at 37 weeks. I was 2cm and 25% effaced. I stayed that way for my 38 and 39 week appointments. I went in to labor at 39w4d. I had contractions that were 2-3 min apart for a good 3 hrs before we even thought about calling the OB and going in. When I got to the hospital (at 3:45am), I was still only 2cm, but 80% effaced on my first check. They said they would monitor me for 2 hrs and if I made a change, I could stay. Luckily, I progressed to 3cm in that time frame and got to stay. I delivered DD at 12:09pm (39w5d).
I didn't get internals since there is no medical need for them. BUT when my water broke my midwife checked me and I was thin but closed completely. I gave birth 24 hours after that first check. my friend had her son 2 weeks after me, she was 2CM for like 3 or 4 weeks! We thought she'd go early before me but she ended up going after me!
At my 35 week appointment I was dilated to 3cm and was 90% effaced. I walked around for 2 weeks and then at my 37 week appointment I was 4cm and 100% effaced. I walked around another week and the day before my next appointment (38 weeks, 2 days) I went into labor. I am to sure if was because I was already dilated so much- but I was only in labor for 4 hours, with little to no pain!
Re: Dialation...for those that have already been there.
