Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Small toddlers

Anybody else still have a peanut? DD is 21 months old and 20 lbs. I'm not sure how tall she is now but shes hovers about 25th percentile so its really just the weight not on the charts. she is a mini DH in looks. DH was a tiny baby/kid but had late growth spurts and was totally average by mid-late teens so we think its just genetics.

DD also has asthma which I've read can cause growth delays, also inherited from her dad! And last she is the worlds pickiest eater!! I pray #2 is a good eater, it's so frustrating!!

just curious if anybody else is dealing with this. FTR her pedi is not concerned but watching her closely. He is sending us to a lung specialist due to her asthma but said all the scary stuff regarding lungs and growth issues, like cystic fibrosis, is screened for at birth here so not to worry.

Re: Small toddlers

  • we are almost 13 months and just hit 18 pounds. according to WHO data, he is in the lower 3rd percentile for weight.  He is 28" long, and thats around the 25th percentile.

we havent come into any health related problems yet, but his pedi did say since he still has some excema, we may have childhood asthma... so we will see about how that one goes...

Yep, I've got one too! Never been on the charts in weight, just like her momma! My pedi is watching her closely, but she said considering her genetics, as long as she is gaining that is fine. Which she is.
  • We actually have a weight-check appointment for our 13 mo old in two days because he's so small. Our pedi isn't concerned because his weight and height are good in relation to each other, but he's below the fifth percentile (I can't recall exactly where). At his 12 month appointment he weighed 17.9 pounds. He loves to eat, but he's a little guy! :)

  • DD has been right around 10th% for height and weight since birth. At her 15mo appointment she was 18lbs 4oz and 29.25".  She's just barely starting to wear 12mo clothes.

  • DD2 is small - she has ranged anywhere from 2% to 12% on the growth chart for weight. At 12 months she was only 17.5 lbs, and now at 20 months she is around 21-22 lbs.

We saw a pedi GI several months ago because her weight gain was erratic and nearly stopped between 12 and 15 months. GI declared her perfectly healthy but believes she has a constitutional growth delay. Instead of her growth following a curve as is "normal," she is making her own pattern on the growth charts. Her growth spurts are also slightly delayed, and she could have a delayed onset to puberty (which we obviously won't know until it happens). She's a great eater most of the time, but high energy and burning off calories as fast as she eats them, which isn't helping her situation :)

  • My girls have always been tiny.  My younger DD is 18 lbs at 22 months.  She was only 15 lbs at 12 months. She went to the Dr every month for weight checks from 3 mos - 15 mos. We were referred to a diagnostic center at a Children's Hospital as well.   But she is perfectly healthy, just tiny (like me.)  She has not been on the charts for weight since she was 4 months old.

  • My DD was 18.5 lbs at her 12 month appointment. Whats worse is that she is kind of on the long side (30.5 inches) so she looks even thinner. She has gained weight pretty consistently so her dr is not worried. It is annoying to have everyone always think she is so much younger. Especially, since she hovers over the kids in her age group. Sometimes even boys. We've been working on offering her healthy fatty foods more often to see if that helps. She is also active so she seems to burn a ton of calories too.

  • My girls were born almost a month early and are both still so tiny.  E weighs just under 20 pounds and H weighs around 23-24 pounds.  They both just started wearing 12 months clothes and are almost 18 months old.  E is especially petite. She is not very tall and is so skinny.  They both eat really well (even tough E is very picky) and have grown with every check-up so our pedi isn't really worried.

yes the comments get old quick. People are always surprised at how old she is and remark on how tiny she is. One specific friend every.single.time she sees her remarks on how tiny she is. I want to scream at her- I KNOW THIS- she's fine, stop making me feel like I'm doing something wrong!!

Argh, that is so frustrating! The only person who ever makes me feel uncomfortable about my son's size is my MIL. I think she knows that he's healthy and just on the small side (we've told her repeatedly that his doctor isn't concerned about his weight), but I guess she isn't able to control her worrying ... Whenever she's hear I swear she is CONSTANTLY shoveling food in his face and commenting about how little he eats. (Which frankly isn't true! He eats plenty!)

Honestly, I would rather him be small for his age than big. My godson (3 years old) has been off the charts for most of his life, and people always think he's five years old. It's rough for him (and his mom) because people expect him to have the abilities of a child two years older. I'm glad my little boy won't have to deal with that!

The same thing happens to me. My friend always comments how small my DS is. My friend's 9 month old DS is bigger than my 14 month old DS, but her son is off the charts in weight/height.  My DS's height has always been about 50%, but his weight has been about 5-10%.  Last week at 14 months he weighed 19.5 pounds.  I was never on the charts growing up and was always small.  My DH is only 5'5".  I'm not too concerned.

DS is smallish but not particularly so.  DD was above average weight at birth (41+ weeks) and then started trending toward 10-20th percentile for height and weight around the end of the first year.  I remember I turned her carseat around before 18 months (before I knew better, and DH was antsy about it) and then felt guilty because she hadn't hit 20 pounds by her 18 month appointment.  I talked to my MIL about it and most of her kids were large babies at birth - bigger than mine, 9 pounds or more - who trended toward the bottom of the charts for a few years and eventually turned out normal, and healthy all along.  DD is still smallish for her age and stands out because she's also the youngest in her kindergarten class, but she holds her own and I think she's starting to tend toward a more normal size.

DS is 17 months and weight is somewhere between 20-21 pounds. We actually took him to a feeding specialist yesterday because he went for a period of 2 weeks a month or so ago where he barely ate anything. He is doing better since then but we kept the appointment anyway. I think he's in the 25th-30th percentile for height, but weight percentile has always hovered around 5%. He gained only 8 oz between his 12 month and 15 month appointment and dropped at that time to 1.5% in weight. I'm hoping at his next well baby appointment he will have at least returned to his usual 5%.

  • Abby has always been in the 5th & 10th percentile for weight and height. She was just over 17 lbs and 29" at her 15 month appt. The pediatrician hasn't been concerned because her growth curve has been consistent. She still wears 9 month clothes (some 6-9 months) and people are always surprised to see her running around because they always think she is much younger. I try to trust that her growth is ok but honestly it is the reason I haven't weaned her. She won't drink CM and I have been worried she will stop gaining if she doesn't get BM.  The comments about her being soooo small don't help either!
