1st Trimester

This helped my nausea, what's helped yours?

Hi all!  I'm on baby #2, had horrible sickness the first time around.. (threw up over 100 times)  and I'm not feeling so hot this time around either.... egh.

Last time Ensure drinks helped me a ton, sometimes when I felt like I couldn't eat they were really easy to take down on my stomach.

My friend said Rice Cakes helped her out quite a bit. I just purchased caramel one's, I dipped them in cool whip. I would have to agree and they'll continue to be on my list of foods to get that I can stomach.

 What's helped you?

  • Eating non-stop, pretty much whatever i'm craving....pb and bagels are working out for me, as are mini-twix.  I also wear sea bands and take b-6. I don't know if ANY of it is actually helping, as i have rolling nausea day and night, but I'm not getting sick.  So there's that.

  • When I wake up, I drink a huge glass of water. I have to eat constantly all day.

I also started wearing sea-bands and taking b-6 yesterday.  I take 25mg twice a day with breakfast and dinner.  It is definitely helping me better especially after I eat.

  • zofran..and pepsid.the doc prescribed them, but thats b/c i lost 15 lbs and i was only 115 to start with, i couldn't stop burping, nothing stayed down.  Another thing that helps is i dont eat and drink liquids at the same time.  i noticed once i ate...then waited a few minutes to drink, i would keep things down a little more.

  • I hav'nt really thrown up but I as well have rolling nausea in the morning & evening. Sipping lemon water works the best for me.

  • Gummy fruit snacks
  • Vitamin B6 and Unisom pills! I take a full 25mg of unisom (make sure they are the tablets and not gel caps) and 50mg of vitamin B6 together every night. I know...it sounds terrible to be pregnant and taking a sleeping pill....but my OB recommended it and it saved me from so much misery. Every week I do a one day trial and stop taking it to see if I'm finally getting out of the all day sickness phase.  So far no luck, but maybe week 13 will have better things in store for me.
  • I took a half of a unisom tablet every night before I went to bed.  It stopped morning sickness with my last pregnancy 16 years ago and curbed my nausea with this one! I would however, consult your doctor before you take it.  My midwife said it was just fine.

  • Bananas are the only thing that works for me!  When I wake up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, I'll have a piece of a banana, and I'll have another piece when I wake up for the day.  If I don't eat a banana, I will throw up, but when I eat the banana, I do not throw up!  Yay!
  • I am just over 10 weeks and so far: Lemon drops and other hard candies, water with lemon in it, sprite, saltine crackers, eating small bland meals, and a lot of fruit seems to help me. I work the night shift and I find the late nights/early mornings are when I am the most nauseous...yay :/

At least I feel better on my days off and I am starting to be able to keep more food down and more food sound good again. For a while I wasn't able to eat meat, especially red meat.

I'm in the night shift frenzy as well... Still haven't found my fix just yet... trying to eat more times a day than the usual two I find time for.  My cravings change everyday, making buying ahead impossible.

  • I am trying ginger infused water.

Boil about 4 cups of water.

Slice up some ginger root (about 2-3 chunks per cup of water).  Place in a tea strainer and let it sit in the boiling water for about 5-7 minutes (like a tea bag).

Add 1 tsp. of brown sugar per cup of water and a few drops of lime juice to kill any overly sweet flavors.

Let it cool in the fridge if you prefer a cold drink.

I have no vomiting but pretty constant nausea all day long, so just having something to sip on helps me cope, and I know you are supposed to be drinking lots of water during pregnancy.  I have also had some relief with smoothies.  If you make your own at home you can add the ginger root to the food processor/blender.

  • eating all day!

ginger for me too. Reeds crystallized ginger or Chimes ginger chews any time i feel queasy. my purse is stocked with them.

  • Eating all day is kind of helping, but making me a giant fatty and nobody wants that!

  • I had horrible nausea with my first pregnancy that lasted until I delivered. I was on Phenergan, then Zofran for the duration. It stopped me from throwing up, but didn't always work on the nausea.

This time I have a new OBGYN that recommended Unisom and B6 before bed. Since Zofran hasn't made a dent in the nausea this time, I tried it. I cannot believe how good I feel. As long as I take the meds before bed, I am almost 100% nausea-free. It's a lifesaver.

  • Sucking on limes or anything that contained limes helped a lot. I ate limes and had my fridge full of sprite and 7-Up. Also, eating small portions helped a lot with my morning sickness.

  • I can't eat any meat or dairy without being sick. So basically all I am eating right now is vegetable soup with lots of snacks during the day. My favorite snacks right now are: fruit (sliced green apples, banana, grapes, cherries, blackberries), English muffins toasted until extra dry, coconut water, apple sauce, graham crackers, Popsicles and hard candy.

  • At 30 weeks I'm still suffering from being sick but its not as bad as it was. My doctor prescribed me zofran (which is expensive as hell) that helped a bit but I found chewing on ice helped soothe my tummy a bit and constantly eating something with protein. Hard candy helped too (my favorites are jolly ranchers and the miniature altoids.) I still carry the mints on me and when I'm feeling sick i pop one or go have a snack

This is my first pregnancy and I found out I was pregnant because of all the nausea. I have been sick since the day I was supposed to have my last period. Here's what helps for me:

Ginger, ginger, ginger! I take a ginger supplement (can be found in the organic section of your grocery store or at any whole foods store) and drink ginger ale or ginger tea. Starbucks has a really good ginger tea that tastes like chamomile tea, so it's not spicy.

I also buy those popsicles that come in plastic tubes (I think they're called flav-or-ice). Cold foods seem to help with my nausea and popsicles are low in calories, so they won't make you feel as guilty as a pint of Ben and Jerry's.

Make sure you're drinking plenty of water. I have a hard time drinking enough water because it makes me feel sicker, but when I have enough throughout the day, I feel much better.

Several people have suggested hard mints. A friend of mine gave me "peppermints," but they turned out to be strawberry flavored. They just made me hungry. So I can't endorse mints just yet.

I have been eating a lot of cough drops because I have a sinus infection from hell and can't take cough syrup. They help with my nausea and are kind of like mints.

  • Diclectin! Get it from your doctor. It's 100% safe, its just Vit B6 really. But it helps so so so much!
  • The active ingredient in Unisom is the same as in Benedryll, correct?  I don't live in the States, and I cannot find Unisom.
  • Zofran.  That's the only things that helped.  I lost so much weight during the first trimester bc of throwing up.

  • Honestly, I tried everything. My doctor suggested some remedies as well and none of those worked. I ended having to go to the hospital for IV fluids at one point my morning sickness was so bad. The only thing that ended up helping was Zophran every six hours and Phenergan at night. Both of these were prescribed by my OB are a totally safe during pregnancy. If it gets to the point where you can't eat or drink anything, it might not hurt to ask about these.
  • Lived off of water with lemon juice. Oranges, anything citrus helped
  • I take half a unisom at night and this keeps me from actually throwing up. Helped with my last pregnancy too. I take b6in the morning. I have been doing like you also and trying to not let my tummy get empty. But I am SO sick of eating crackers and cereal and bland crap! Ugh! But if I don't force it down then I feel sick. If I think of something throughout the day that sounds halfway ok then I try to accommodate that... It's not easy though!

There are two types of unisom. The gelcaps are the same as Benadryl but the tablets are a different drug. It's diphenhydramine succinate, which is what you want to help with the ms. I don't know if its available in another product or not... Maybe you could order from amazon? I don't even know if they sell unisom...

  • Nothing helped mine actually. The gingerale, crackers or even medicine from my doctor. I just had to let it pass but now that I only get nausious from time to time If I have a popsicle or icee that helps alot. I also know I need to stay away from milk in the morning cause that causes me to feel sick.

I was told to try Peppermint Essential Oil.  I put one drop on my hand then lick it off.  I can also put a drop or 2 in a small amount of water.  I'll admit, it works for a couple of hours, but now the smell of peppermint makes me nauseous as well.  Regardless, it does help.  I just need to wash out the cup and "hide" the bottle so I don't smell it in-between.  I haven't vomited at all, but I have this "rolling nausea" all day long.  I'm able to drink fluids and eat if I don't have to think about it, but if my hubby asks what I want for supper, it's going to be "nothing".  However, if he fixes supper and puts the plate in front of me, I'm fine.  Crazy, I know.  But he's great at taking care of me. :)

  • I am on baby number 2 and have extreme nausea as well.  I have found soda crackers and ginger ale to be helpful.   Salty things like pretzels or potato chips work some too.  I eat my main meals in the mid morning and mid afternoon.  Those times of day seem to stay down.   Lemon ice water works some too.  I avoid a lot of dairy.
  • Gardetto's snack mix has been something I can almost always eat (I think it's the carbs). Also the instant breakfast packets you mix with milk have been a life saver ( they're a lot like ensure). Protein bars too, when meat sounds icky ... Which has been most of my first trimester. I'm at 13 weeks now so I am hoping the nausea and vomiting stops soon.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • drinking water immediately in the morning, also having tortilla chips on hand when I started to get hungry. something about the salt really helped. If it was really bad, I would take some tums and get something nutritional but also salty.
  • I haven't been sick but have rolling nausea in the afternoons. I've found that snaking on Trader Joe's Ginger Cat cookies all day long is keeping it at bay. Just a handful (they're small) every twenty minutes or so, and since they're low in calories they're not causing me to inflate in weight. I also have a banana for breakfast every day, but I've always done that so I don't know if that's making a difference or not. Good luck!

    Perrier mineral water!
  • Be careful with ginger. In large amounts, it can be dangerous during pregnancy. My OB told me to only consume foods with small amounts of ginger. Absolutely DO NOT take ginger as a supplement without consulting your OB!!!

With my first pregnancy, I was so sick all day through my second trimester, that I lost 20 lbs!  My second pregnancy, my doctor told me to take B6 and I dont think I threw up more than once or twice. This is my third pregnancy. I was very sick beginning at about 5 weeks until about 16 weeks. And I slept A LOT!  I took 50mg of B6 morning and night with this pregnancy and my last. It really helps! I couldn't tolerate any kind of food except fresh fruit. Mostly bananas, black grapes, and a ton of watermelon! Snacking on these constantly throughout the day kept the actual vomiting at bay on most days. I also opted out of the prenatals when I started being sick and just doubled up on my kids' vitamins and added a folic acid tablet. They take the Little Critters gummy vites and they are really yummy and easy to get down and keep down. I am 19 weeks now, and I've just started back on my prenatal vitamins. But I have to take them at bedtime to tolerate them. I wish I had known about the sea bands before.. would have loved to try them! (Not really sick anymore, Praise The Lord!)

Also, my not healthy go too.. Sprees candy and SweeTarts!  Sour candy helps alot with nausea, but if you eat very much of it then you need to use a toothpaste that helps to harden and rebuild enamel. (Sensadine Pronamel works well)  Sour stuff, especially lemons/lemon juice is great, but will eat up the enamel on your teeth due to the acid content!

This is what has helped me.. hopefully it will benefit some of you too! :)

  • Cinnamon!! Red hots and cinnamon disks! It was a total accident, I felt a little ill when my Brother in law was watching a video of a guy projectile vomiting, I grabbed the red hots he'd been snacking on and they worked like a charm!
  • The BEST tip I got was to understand that it might not be a one solution fix, and that stacking different methods would be my best bet. Just make sure if its different meds, you get your OB/midwife's ok.

Stay hydrated, getting dehydrated makes the nausea worse.  If you can't stomach water, try popcicles, sucking ice cubes, lemonade, etc

Also, make sure you are getting protein - I can't do much meat and dairy makes the nausea worse, so I've found some Cliff bars I like, used Ensure when I couldn't keep solids down, and have been living on BLT's with avocado.  I notice I definitely feel better when I maintain my protein levels.

Also, the B6/Unisom (which I believe is similar to Diclectin) has been a LIFE SAVER.  Zofran helps with the vomiting, but doesn't always work with the nausea.

Also, don't get hungry and don't eat too much at once.

Everything else has been hit or miss, sometimes candy works, sometimes gum works, sometimes I can handle mint, sometimes crackers and starches help, but they seem to only last for so long - as in I've been half way through a baked potato and suddenly can't deal with the taste anymore. What works today, won't tomorrow and vice versa.

In the end, some days nothing helped and I ended up in the ER for dehydration due to food aversions and vomiting.   Hooray for hyperemesis.

  • My ob told me to have a bite or two of anything in the middle of the night when I get up to pee!  World of difference!  Also dry cheerios!
  • I am experiencing nausea, but I have not thrown up (crossing my fingers).  My aunt recommended eating a few saltine crackers before I even get out of bed. I gave it a try this morning and my morning was a lot smoother! I don't eat meat, so I am trying to get protein without having to eat a lot, because I can't stomach it right now!    Nothing but fruit, juice and Italian Ice sound appealing, so I am trying to graze on almonds and cheese, so I can get some protein.  I've also tried watering down the "Naked" protein drink, because I think it is really chalky tasting.  It has 30g of protein.

From this I discovered that if I would drink a litter when I woke up, my sickness would be gone all together or much much better. On bad days I would even drink it some through the day. • I'm eating all day but I've already gained around 4- 5 lbs and I'm only 7 weeks! Ritz crackers with or without hummus helps. I will try the b 6 and sea bands. I'm worse in am and around dinner time which makes me worthless at dinner - I love to cook (or used to haha) so my hubs  who never really cooked keeps making pizza and other easy unhealthy food. I'm getting grossed out by it now and am totally confused about what I want for dinner! Think I might stick with cheerios or something

  • Dill Pickle Juice

  • sea bands and preggie pops have helped me so much... along with lots of saltine crackers!
  • a glass of milk! it is the only thing that worked for me, and it was instantaneous.  if I feel sick, one sip and its gone. beyond bizzare
  • I take Ginger Root capsules I buy at GNC. It helps morning sickness, heart burn, and constipation :)

  • Last pregnancy it was apple juice with ice in it.  When even that stopped working, my OB suggested Unisom, and oh my god that shit is a miracle drug!  One pill each night and I felt great all day until bedtime.  It was meant to be an anti-nausea drug but kept putting people to sleep so they remarketed it.

Has anyone else experienced this? What have you still been able to force down even though your appetite is lacking?

Smoothies.  Something bulky, like peaches/bananas, and then berries to make it taste awesome.  I use OJ as a base because I don't like milk based smoothies, but some people find that too acidic.  I also add a tablespoon of nut butter for protein.  Hope you feel better!
