TTC After a Loss

DH got bereavement pay

Somehow management found out about the day he called out to go to the doctors to find out we miscarried.  He originally used some sick time, but now they are giving him back the hours he used and pay him for the day.  He could have actually taken 3 days.  I am looking at his company policy...so according to Home Depot "the following immediate family relationships are included:....child (including miscarriage for which both father and mother are eligible)" Thank you Home Depot for recognizing the loss of our child, I wish everyone saw it that way.

Re: DH got bereavement pay

  • I'm actually pretty impressed with HD after reading that. I get the impression most companies downplay m/c way too much. It makes me glad to hear that they have a little bit of compassion in such a circumstance. :)

  • I am usually a Lowe's shopper but this may convert me.  That is an awesome policy.

I took off the day of my D&C as "personal time"...and that's it (it was a Friday).  But I was totally nonproductive my first couple days back so i should have tried to take more.  DH took day of D&C only as a sick day.

This is very impressive, it is very rare that major retailers will recognize this. I would know I have worked for a number of them.

  • Whoa...I need to look over my policy. I doubt it's included but if it is, dude, they owe me a TON of time.
  • Wow - that's really something that Home Dept. has a policy like that.  Although, I can have 5 days off for the death of a child, I don't think that miscarriage counts, there is no mention of it in the policy.

Whoa, that is awesome (the bereavement part, not the loss part).

I tried that with my company (to take a week off). They said that if I was too upset to work, then I needed to file a mental disability with FMLA. I ended up just taking sick time.

this happened to me too. i called my doc and she wrote a letter saying i was "under her care" for 7 days to include the D&C. FMLA accepted it and it worked out in the end. My job also told me I'd have to go sit through a mental health evaulation to determine if I was "mentally sound" if i did file for mental health leave through FMLA.

since when is the loss of a loved one a mental illness? christ these stoires piss me off. what is wrong with people? most companies just don't get it.
