I wanted to start getting all of the details worked out for the book club. I will warn everyone that I have a horrible tendency to overthink things and if I am overthinking this, you all are welcome to tell me and I will not be offended. Here are some of the details I thought should be figured out, if there is anything else, feel free to chime in (in addition to responding to any previous questions). Also, I tagged those that either responded to or liked the poll from last week to get input from those that I know are interested, anyone else who wants to join is welcome to respond as well!
When do you want to start the first book?
How often do you want to start a new book?
How often will we "meet" to discuss the book? How will the book to be read be decided?
I don't know what would work best for this format, so I'll just throw some stuff out that I've seen other book clubs do. One local book club doesn't have everyone read the same book, but rather they all talk about the book they are personally reading and then conversation flows from those topics, if that makes sense. It's more casual I guess? On the other hand, if everyone reads the same book, perhaps we could stick to a certain page length to assure it's manageable for everyone? To choose a book, we could take suggestions for a day and do a vote? Choose a theme each time to guide suggestions? Meet weekly, Book Club Fridays, or something like that? Perhaps the person whose book is chosen in the vote could lead or ask for volunteers? Again, I am just throwing out ideas, so please everyone decide on whatever you think is best for this format! I am super flexible with whatever is decided
When do you want to start the first book? maybe Dec 1
How often do you want to start a new book? monthly
How often will we "meet" to discuss the book? monthly How will the book to be read be decided? another online one I'm in has a Google Doc where we've listed books we're interested in reading. Then we use a randomizing tool to "pick" one.
Who will lead the discussions? maybe we can rotate responsibilities monthly?

I like the idea of having a poll to choose the book. If we plan to start December 1st (just one of the suggestions I saw) I say we hold that poll soon to give people time to get the book. I am not sure what would be good for how often considering everyone reads at different paces. I know when I get a book I obsess and HAVE to finish it so I go through books quickly. My best friend however, takes like months to read a book! Maybe we could try like every two weeks to begin with and then adjust it as needed until we see how the group does timeline wise. Maybe we could take a volunteer to lead the discussion and alternate if more than one is interested. I know some want know part of leading and others love it.
I've never been in a book club before so these are just my suggestions. If someone who has been in book clubs before has better suggestions, I've fine with going with that. I'm a newbie to this!
When do you want to start the first book? beginning of December
How often do you want to start a new book? monthly, maybe 2-3 weeks to read and a week or two to discuss
How often will we "meet" to discuss the book? biweekly or monthly How will the book to be read be decided? I like the idea of a poll
Who will lead the discussions? I think this should be on a volunteer basis. I think once the initial discussion is started, other people can chime in with other discussion topics
Maybe we could start with what kind of books we are looking for (If someone could make this into a poll that would be awesome) my mind can't seem to comprehend enough for that today.
I like the idea of having 1-2 weeks to read the book because I get all my books from the library and need time to pick it up. But I read quickly (I read daily on my commute) so I can also do a shorter period.
I also like the idea of someone volunteering to guide the discussion but everyone chiming in on the topics/questions that interest them.
When
do you want to start the first book? December
How often do you want to start a new book? Monthly
How often will we "meet" to discuss the book? Monthly
How will the book to be read be decided? It looks like we have 15 interested members right now, if each of us submitted a title that could be the start of a list we add to as we go along.
Who will lead the
discussions? We could use a website like this to post questions that everyone
answers and let discussion flow from there.
I'd like to participate, but don't have any thoughts on how to set it up - I've only been a member of one book club and we really just drank a lot of wine and never got around to discussing any books
My two cents - we may not even need someone to lead the discussion. In the book club I do with my friends, we just start off with the general "what did you think" and conversation flows naturally.
What types of books does everyone typically read? I read a lot of mystery, with the occasional chick lit thrown in.
I'm definitely interested in participating - I love to read!
One suggestion - although I'm open to starting in December (and think one book/month is good), it may be harder due to the holiday season. Not saying that we shouldn't get things underway, but more just keep it in mind in case it's a bit slow?
So many good ideas here! I will weigh in on one thing. I also vote for 1 month per book. I usually take longer than that, but I know other people are much quicker, so maybe that would be a happy medium, especially if we are only discussing biweekly? I used to get through them much faster, but now my free reading time has basically been reduced to right before bed, and I can't be the only one...right?
I think this is a fabulous idea. I read a lot, and quickly, so I'm good with whatever timeline works for others. I also like the idea of naturally flowing discussion that @hartmich brought up. I feel like it will maybe feel more conversational and less "English Lit 101" that way.
I also have no suggestions for genres. I am open to reading pretty much anything.
start in december one book per month poll for book choice and just casual conversation about the books will be easy considering us ladies can carry on multiple conversations in one WTO/TWW thread daily!
Maybe people in the group can offer a book they have wanted to read in this thread to start the poll

I love to read, but I've never been a part of a book club before so I love this idea. A book a month starting in December and polls for the books sound good to me and I think we could have volunteers lead to start the discussion off and then see where it goes from there.

Yes yes yes to all of this! Any thoughts about where we will host this? On this board? Private group? I don't have a preference either way just thought I'd throw that out there. Also, I'm super excited to get started. Should we start taking a few nominations to have a poll for the first book so it gives people time to get it?

I think 1 book/month is a good schedule. I know a lot of us ladies can finish a hook alot quicker than that, but I think that will work best to include everyone.
I also like the idea of a private group instead of using the TTGP board. It feels slightly exclusive having it on the TTC board and I would hate for someone to not join just because they aren't TTC.

That's a good point @ChefRamsey. Also, I like NBR threads on here, but I feel like this might cause a lot of specific book club threads that could take away from what this board is for. I'd be willing to help mod a private group if we want to go that way.

Thank you everyone for the feedback to help get this off the ground! @linzrunz@ChefRamsay I had thought about asking if it should be hosted here or elsewhere but figured people would prefer to keep it on TB. If you think a private group (or another site) is best, I'm more than happy to go along with that! I've never been involved in private groups so I'm a little clueless as to how they work exactly (other than the private part of it, obviously ). Should we start the nominations on this thread or wait till we have the new group set up?
I am in a couple groups but never been a mod, though I'm familiar with the controls they have (closing threads, accepting new members, etc) I'm mobile right now but I can start one. We can always try it with a private group and if it doesn't work out, we can disband.
