Thanks for checking in @Drove2u ! We're still waiting for this freakin spot in rehab (should be any day now), but I had my best friend here over the last few days and she was super supportive (while joking that she was coming for my bootcamp training prep for an Ironman). That, combined with just where I'm at in terms of recovery, has led to pretty awesome results in the past few days. I'm now getting dressed in real clothes and not wearing a diaper (I'm still having trouble with peeing, but doing self-catheterization since this morning after it took 3 nurses to do it last night....), and yesterday, I was able to take a walk around the unit with the walker (like the whole unit). I'm also spending more time in a wheelchair so I'm not always in bed and so I've been able to change a few diapers and outfits for our son these past few days. Even managed to give him most of his bath myself the other day (just need DH's supervision for obvious reasons). I'm seeing improvements every day, so that's really encouraging. Will keep you posted...but my objective is to walk with less support (maybe a low walker instead of the high one I have now) by the end of the week. I'm now able to get myself out of bed using my arm strength rather than getting diaper wedgies, so that's been nice And our little guy has to be the best baby on earth...he sleeps up to 5 hours at night. And he'a just the cuddliest little thing.
Good news: I was transferred to the rehab unit yesterday! Bad news: these guys are way too focused on protecting themselves, not enough on getting me up and running...so I'm showing off the new things I can do every day, and not quite listening to them otherwise. I was told I needed to call the nurse every time I needed to use the bathroom so a nurse can supervise me getting there. 1) This mama bear wants to independence. 2) mama bear also just regained bladder function, and that means I can't wait 40 min for my nurse to decide she finally responds to the call bell. So yeah...I've been going on my own like a big girl. The way things are going, it seems realistic to think that we'll be able to go home within the next two weeks or so. I can't wait! We're lucky to be in a brand new hospital with amazing facilities, but that still isn't home...and after 2 1/2 weeks spent in 5 different hospital rooms in 3 hospitals, I've had enough. Thanks to everyone who has been encouraging me here! Figured I'd share the progress...this was taken by DH to show the facility to his boss, and I'm in the background with my new walker (less supportive than the last one).
I'm so excited to see and hear about your progress. 2 weeks! You can do it, mama! Your strength and positivity are so admirable. As always, I'm wishing you nothing but the best and continued progress and recovery!

Hi everyone! My husband and I have been a little frustrated with the rehab facility as the main physios were away most of this week and so there's been no continuity in my care and very little work done with me- so we've been taking in in our own hands, but we discussed our dissatisfaction with the physio today who seems to have understood. So I now have a program, goals, and even a tentative discharge date: next Friday! In the meantime, we'll be working on more and more independence while walking, going up and down stairs (I really wish our house aas a bungalow right now...I may have been able to go home much sooner), and we'll be working on getting in and out of the car tomorrow. I've been able to do half squats (with little support) and quarter squats without support, and I'm starting to be able to bend down enough to pick some things off the floor. So there's progress! Will keep you posted!
@Drove2u : I've been using a walker (yup, I'm 31 going on 83 . I know that we've discussed me using the railing on one side and a cane on the other to go up and down the stairs...so if I could somehow be walking with a cane by next week also, that'd be wonderful, but we'll see. Just being home the 3 of us is going to be wonderful...I'm hoping I'll also feel solid enough on my feet to be able to hold baby and transport him from point A to point B (even a short distance), but we'll see. There's still definitely some pain in my back because of the incision (about 8 inches long), so that's making holding him without support pretty hard...we'll have to see if we can get him in our Ergo carrier...he loves to be snuggled and be on us, so I'd think he would like that. For now, I'm looking forward to sitting in my car tomorrow. It still scares me to think I may not be able to drive it again at least for some time, but we'll get there when we get there...
It sounds like you are making some great progress!! Especially since at first they weren't sure you'd walk again. I am so happy for you and am rooting you on from here. You got this, I know you can do it. Slow and steady. I'm glad you said something to the physio and they got their butts in gear.

Again, thanks everyone for the support! More good news: I've now been able to go up and down stairs holding the railing on one side, and with the cane in the other hand. I'm also starting to be able to walk short distances with a cane or completely unassisted...but I do look like a wobbly kid in a 31 years old woman's body. AND: I get my first overnight pass tonight! My first night home in almost 4 weeks!!! We're hoping they just decide to discharge us Thursday morning instead of Friday. I'm still not feeling solid enough to be able to carry our little guy, but getting there. He's doing fantastic, is a wonderful baby and just so alert now. We can't wait to have our little routine at home!

Really random question, @kidshrink... Will you be using a baby carrier of some sort while when getting used to walking around? I'm just curious as to how that would work or if it would throw off your balance even more. I have driven one of my cats around in a stroller downstairs in our house, and that was pretty amusing, but it worked. I'm so glad you got an overnight pass! Fingers crossed for you!
@Piperella : good question! We've actually been exploring that as an option (We have an Ergobaby 360, which wouldn't touch my incision in any way and spreads the weight better than other options, and baby has loved being in it on DH so far). When I'm a bit more solid of my feet, definitely. For now, I'm still too wobbly, and adding 9 lbs of baby to my front wouldn't really help me. Hopefully sometimes next week? I'm still seeing daily improvements, and my next goals are to walk independently and be able to carry/hold the baby from one place to the next. I'll be practicing with other items than my precious one first...not willing to risk breaking him right now
I am so happy for you! Your baby is absolutely adorable! I love those big eyes! Congrats!
