Esme...Will everyone think of Twilight? STILL?!

Hi, all,

I've been really quiet on the boards so far, but our little girl is due in less than 3 months, and we're having a problem with our top name choice. We're keeping it a secret to friend and family, so I'm relying on you guys to help me out!

We LOVE the name Esme (pronounced EHZ-may, probably spelled with the accent over the e, Esmé). But I guess there's a character in the Twilight series with this name. I'm not a fan of the series, and I'm really worried that people will think we named her after that character. But I've loved that name before I even heard about the Twilight thing!

Do you think it's a big deal? Hasn't Twilight sort of blow over by now?!

Esme is my top GP name, because it will always remind me of Granny Weatherwax in the Discworld novels. :) I haven't read Twilight either, but I don't believe that Esme was even a major character. Definitely not on par with Bella or Edward. I think you're fine. If anyone asks whether you named her after Twilight, a simple "No, I haven't read the books, we just loved the name" would suffice.

Good luck! I wish I could get my DH to come around on Esme! :)

I read the books in high school and Twilight seems to have died. I wouldn't link the two

No the name itself is gaining popularity and twilight is old news. Hunger games is ending which IMO took over the tween twilight obsession and soon another series will. I wouldn't let a side character in a series stop you from using it.

    Love Esme.  Never read twilight.

Never read Twilight, so  I don't get the reference. But no one her age will even know about the book, so I don't think it'll matter. FWIW, I think Esme is a lovely name.

Love the name and I don't think of twilight at all.  Salinger comes to mind first- For Esme with Love and Squalor is one of his famous short stories.

Never read twilight and didn't know about any characters beyond Bella and Edward. Go for it!

I've seen the movies but I think they've died off enough that it's not a big deal. Use the name. It's really pretty. I don't think the accent is necessary.

I also never read Twilight nor know anyone who would admit they did. I think it's lovely.

I definitely think Twilight only because I don't know anyone else with the name. I would LOVE to not think of Twilight anymore when I hear the name. Knowing a little girl with the name would actually be beneficial, I think. ;)

I've read all the books and seen all the movies. That being said, I do think of twilight but not in a negative way. The twilight craze has definitely died down by now. I think it's a beautiful name and you should use it if you love it!!

Definitely use it. Twilight will be well in the past when she's in school if it's not already.

I love the name Esme! I read twilight, but the name Esme actually makes me think of JD Salinger's For Esme, with Love and Squalor; so I seriously doubt people will think it's in reference to Stephanie Meyers's works.

I read the books (and watched the movies), and I would think of it, but not enough that I would roll my eyes at it. Now if you were talking about Elsa, that is a different story. I think that the whole Twilight thing has died off enough.

The only Twilight name I judge is Renesme, just no. But Esme is beautiful and normal name. Rosalie is on my list and she was a minor character in Twilight also.

Oh my God. Renesme. The worst. I think I threw the book when I read that. Not that it was the first time but I think I threw it harder than normal.

Esme is beautiful. I will always think Twilight but not in a negative way. There are a ton of nice names in the series so no judgement here

Esme is very pretty and those books are old news now. I have a friend who named her daughter Esme and never think of the books.

However, please note that if you add the accent on the second 'e' the proper pronounciation becomes ehz-MAY, which is not what you wrote out, so I believe you might not want to add the accent mark.

It's a pretty name. I'm only familiar with the Esmée spelling for girls - I thought Esmé was the masculine version.

I don't mind the name but I do think of Twilight. I do not think any of her peers will have that association though.

When I read it in the title, I immediately thought of Twilight. BUT, it's a very pretty name. And her generation certainly wouldn't associate it with Twilight.

Honestly the first thing that comes to mind for me is Twilight.  I've read some of the books and seen some of the movies but I'm not a superfan.  My mind just goes there because it's the only Esme I've ever heard of.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't use it.  Twilight pops to mind first but then if I knew a baby Esme, the association would fade.  It's not that strong of an association to me or (I assume) to most people.

Technically, yes, Esmée is the feminine form but it was a really popular name in the 1930s-1950s in the UK/Commonwealth countries and most used the Esmé/Esme spelling. Either is correct in terms of acceptable spelling but if you're a Francophile, you could spell it with the feminine suffix
