Starting Progesterone in the second trimester...?

I'm 13w5d and I just got my progesterone results back.... 23.5, which I think is on the "low normal" side. My progesterone has always been on the "low normal" side since the start, but I thought it would rise once the placenta started taking over production. Guess not.

Can you start taking progesterone in the second trimester? It would only be so I don't lose the baby, not because I have another underlying reason like spotting or something. Any advice would be appreciated.. Thanx.

I don't/wouldn't take anything that my OB doesn't prescribe or approve. Talk to your Dr.

I started taking progesterone at 22 weeks but it is due to incompetent cervix. It's supposed to help prevent preterm labor. I would talk to your doctor about your levels, but if they're not worried, I wouldn't be.

Thanks for the responses. The doctor doesn't seem to be worried, so I guess I should relax.. Easier said than done.

The general thinking is that the placenta takes over, but every placenta is different.  Mainstream medicine won't generally test your progesterone levels after the first trimester, but some women still need progesterone supplementation until up to 37 weeks into pregnancy if their levels are low.  If you are worried, I would press to have your doctor test your levels throughout your pregnancy and stay on progesterone if needed.

You can't get progesterone without a prescription and even if you could, there is no such thing as too much progesterone.

Op if y are concerned ask for some oral progesterone or two shots of progesterone in oil weekly. That number seems low to me but I'm no doctor. I know at 9 weeks my progesterone was 80, but I did IVF and am on progesterone supplementation.

I start my progesterone shots next week at 16 weeks, i have an incompetent cervix. My last doc allowed my husband to give the shots to me but this new clinic would send out a nurse to my home weekly. I would continue to take the shots until I Reach 37 weeks.
