~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~

Welcome! This is a check-in for moms who are/were on a dairy free and/or soy free diet due to their LO's intolerance. The check-ins will be posted every Monday morning on the Breastfeeding board and XP'd to the Food Allergy board. If you'd like to join the group, just post an intro here and dive in! To check out the archive of our previous check-ins, please see the MSPI Moms Blog.

1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?

2. We're on to entrees for week 3 of our holiday recipe series. How about something for Thanksgiving?

3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?

Re: ~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~

  • 1. We're great! DS is 20mo now and only BF 1x per day. It is bittersweet for me, but he is thriving on goat's milk products (milk, cheese, yogurt). He is still sensitive to dairy and soy but nursing him so little has allowed me to include some dairy back into my diet.

    2. Last year we made roasted, salted pumpkin seeds and almonds as a snack-y thing around Thanksgiving time and we have stuck with it as a delicious all the time snack! Pre-heat oven to 250F. spread almonds and pumpkin seeds on a baking sheet, liberally salt (i think we used 1/2lb of seeds/nuts and 1tbsp of salt). Place in heated oven for 20-30 mins. (around the halfway point i usually go in and shake everything around a bit and then return to oven.)

    3. We are discussing TTC around January...is it likely that LO2 will be MSPI as well? Anyone with experience?
I know with siblings there is an increased chance that they will also be MSPI, but they also might not have it.  DD did not have it, but DS did.

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? We're ok. Fighting off the latest daycare virus. Being sick causes W's face to flare up so I can't tell if he's reacting to food. I had some bread that said "may contain soy" and the next day he had a smelly, mucousy poop. So I'm pretty sure the soy is bothering him. But his face didn't break out until the next day after he had some WCM for the first tine (which I think made him gassy) and spicy salmon. Poor baby is a mess. And I have a plugged duct. :\ I need to order more lecithin.

    2. We're on to entrees for week 3 of our holiday recipe series. How about something for Thanksgiving? We are going low key this year and I think we will just roast a turkey breast seasoned with herbs. We eat that all the time. Maybe I'll brine it for extra juiciness.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?Allergist still hasn't called me with final test results. It's been over a week since he had the blood draw. Would you call the dr yourself?

  • @Katiemm623 Welcome! Check out our blog archive for lots of posts about what to eat! My go-to snacks are chips & guac, veggies & hummus, nuts & fruit, Larabars, and Kit's Organic Bars (made by Clif Bars).
  • Intro:

Hi ladies.  I posted earlier today about my LO.  We are still not sure if it is MSPI but I am dairy and soy free.

    1) I'm getting discouraged seeing no improvements despite diet changes for 6 weeks.  LO is happy, growing well, etc but poop seems to be worse the past few days (lots of blood).

    2)  Haven't figured out Thanksgiving yet.  I'm still working on day to day dinner recipes.

    3)  Do you avoid soybean oil and soy lecithin despite the lack of soy protein in these ingredients?  Anyone have the symptoms show up later for their baby?  Ours didn't start until 4 months.
2 year TTC journey with successful IVF in Nov 2012- B/G Twins!
Baby Boy diagnosed with omphalocele and diaphragmatic hernia
Born at 32 weeks due to PROM.  Emergency c-section due to prolapsed cord.

DS was really sensitive, but he did fine when I ate soybean oil and soy lecithin.

    @mrscjmb9410

Both my boys were MPI as babies. So were three of my four nephews. My mom thinks I was as a baby.

But I do have friends that have one child that had it and one or more without it.

@afwifelife Are they always green?Your diet can cause green poo. So can how baby's gut digests certain solids if you'be intro'ed them. Green mucousy poo is what you really want to avoid.

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? I'm ok. Just tired. Too much work and cleaning. DS has a cold and also had a green poop yesterday :(

    2. We're on to entrees for week 3 of our holiday recipe series. How about something for Thanksgiving? We go to my mom's for Thanksgiving. She makes a roast turkey.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? I'm wondering why DS had a green poop. We ate out at a diner Saturday night and they said there was no egg or dairy in what we ordered. If they messed up, could it have shown up less than 24 hours later? In the past it usually was day 2 and 3 for him.

  • @katiemm623 I like almond milk yogurt with strawberries for a snack or an apple with pb. Then there's lots of safe carbs which I have too much of.

@cdale86 we only avoid soy protein. Soy lecithin, oil, and flour are all okay for us. However I've heard of others who had to avoid all soy. Trial and error - you could avoid all of it for a few weeks then reintroduce the soys one at a time. Also gave you considered the blood could be from another food? A food journal can help you figure out if something else is bothering your LO. (Although you might already be doing this) That is how I realized my DS can't have eggs.

@rocknrollfriend I would definitely call the Dr if it were me. I'd be too curious not to. If you feel like a pain you could just apologize and blame it on nerves and ask when could you call back

  • Hello! I was told yesterday that the pediatrician suspects my 1 month old son has a milk protein allergy. I'm cutting out all dairy and milk protein now to see how he does, and if that doesn't do the trick then I'll have to cut out soy as well. I'm looking forward to keeping up with this check-in, and I am very much in need of recipe ideas! I had GD during pregnancy, but this seems a lot harder. I apparently eat a lot of dairy... Haha!

  • Hi all, it looks like I'm back on the MSPI bandwagon with my second (he will be 5 wks old on Wed). Looking forward to the weekly check-in for moral support!

    1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?
I've been dairy and soy free for about 14 days and after seeing no change in stools, I'm getting more drastic with diet changes (eliminating wheat/gluten, egg, oats, etc). After being more restrictive since Friday, I was hoping to see more of a change, but my son had some streaks of blood in his diaper this morning. The hardest part of this whole ordeal is not knowing for sure what is causing the problem!

    2. We're on to entrees for week 3 of our holiday recipe series. How about something for Thanksgiving?
I'm not looking forward to Thanksgiving! We'll be with my in-laws, who are less understanding of breastfeeding/food intolerances. I'll probably end up making/bringing an entire alternate meal.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?
For the PP who asked about MSPI running in families, both my sons had/have it, FWIW.
I'd love to hear from other moms how long it took for diapers to clear up after you cut offending foods...

    1) Just returned from weight check.  Ds is back close to the 25% growth curve that the Pedi thought he should be following.  He is now taking 5 4oz bottles during the day plus nursing at night/early morning.

    2) So far we have been able to sub rice milk/EB for the milk/butter in our meals so we haven't had to go searching for milk/soy free versions of our favorite meals.

    3) I did find it annoying that WIC only allows cow milk and soy milk.  They don't cover the other milk alternatives because they don't have enough protein in them.  Not really helpful for moms breastfeeding MPSI babies.  Though I can't complain too loud, because they are covering the $150 cost of 4 cans of Neocate/month for supplementing for ds2.

  • 1. We are doing alright! I'm tired since he's started waking up to nurse in the MOTN. :( but happy that he loves nursing!

    2. We are going places... I'm giving my mom some dairy free soy free butter substitute to cook with so I can have things! :) So hopefully I'll be able to get most of that. And I'll plan to take quite a bit to my inlaws. So I can "co-eat" with everyone. Hopefully people won't eat my food! We found a boxed surfing that was okay, and a gravy packet. And will make mashed potatoes. And maybe a desert?! We made some cookies with enjoy life chips and substitute butter. And they were great!! Much better than boxed cookies!

    3. @rocknrollfriend are these shinners? Once you mentioned it I feel like I can see them on DS. Poor baby -- I wonder what else he could be allergic to!

PS I'd call for results. Doctors offices always get behind and busy. So it wouldn't hurt to call. image
    image
  • Also, I tried to eat some cookies with the "may contain soy and dairy" but nothing was listed in the ingredients. And his face flared up and we had some moucusy poops. :(
    image
  • @YellowLily2013 That's what happened to me to, nothing in the ingredients, just the "may contain". Boo. The dark circles under your LOs eyes do look a lot like what my DS has. I think it might just be from the MSPI, but I don't know for sure. They can also show up due to congestion from colds or teething, or from crying.

On to poop... To those wondering about when the diapers should clear up, it took us a long time. When I was clear of dairy and soy they became less green and mucousy, but still were smelly and just not quite "right'. It wasn't until I cut out eggs, peanuts, and wheat, at 7 mo old, that poop became more normal. @brideinsummer04 My DS has telltale poop within 1 day of me eating something, usually. @cdale86 I have had to avoid all soy, including oil and lecithin (I take sunflower lecithin for plugged ducts!). Some babies are more sensitive than others. I would try cutting all soy before anything else.

The allergist's nurse called me this morning, all tests were negative! I still want to talk to the doc about his face flaring up all the time, if I can do anything to treat that, so I'm waiting for her to call me back. @Earlybird725 Our visit was about 1 hr, but we didn't do a scratch test, which would have taken longer. We spent the hour discussing his history and symptoms, and learned he was dermatographic, and ordered blood tests. We went back another day for the blood tests (actually 2 days since he didn't have enough blood, poor baby). The first visit was fine, and I've heard lots of kids don't even notice the scratches, if that's what you end up doing. GL!

  •  @JarynA Welcome! There are lots of good recipes at www.mspimama.com, and in our blog archives we've saved all the past check-ins, and we have talked about food a lot! GL, I hope your LO's symptoms clear up soon.
  • I have a question before I officially delve into this check in. My son (whose just over 2) had mspi and I knew based on green mucous-y poo and fussiness. Well now I have a 4 week old daughter who just started getting fussy over the last week and it seems to possibly be in response to me eating cheese, but has normal poop (maybe a slight green tint once in awhile but NOTHING like my son). So I've been trying a dairy free diet the past two days and she seems to be better, and last night DH ave her a bottle of pre-diet frozen milk without thinking and she was fussy immediately after. Is it possible for that milk to affect her so quickly? And is it possible to have mspi without the pool changes? Or do you think im just looking for mspi because of my son's history?

You're welcome to join us either way and share your experiences with your son!
I have heard from other moms that they can just cut out major dairy and their LOs seem more comfortable. I don't know if that's necessarily MSPI or a mild form of it or maybe reflux related? But if she does better when you cut out dairy, and it's not that much of a burden on you, might as well do what works, right? Keep us posted on how you all are doing!
  • Hi there, I'm Samantha and a ftm to DD. She will be 9 weeks tomorrow. I've been dairy and beef free for five weeks after her doctor suspected a MPI because of green mucosy stools. I've been pretty careful about what I'm eating and have only had one accident with some dairy in salad dressing that I wasn't aware of. The same time i went dairy free, DD's doctor also put her on Zantac for reflux. Since she's been on that and I've been dairy free, her mood has certainly been better. I'm not sure if being dairy free is what helped her mood or the Zantac is. It's hard to determine since they happened at the same time. The problem is that she is still having green mucosy poops 99% of the time.

Yesterday I noticed she had some blood in her stool. I took her in to the doctor and was instructed to cut out chocolate, peanuts, citrus and strawberries. If that doesn't change anything, the next tier is wheat, soy, tree nuts, fish, shellfish and eggs. What I'm wondering is if I should just try and go soy free now?

    Thank you in advance!

  • Hi gals! A little late to the party this week but I made it!

    1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? I'm doing well and so is she! Other than being backed up for 3 days then having a major blow out to the point we had to throw out her Jammies last night we are tons better. (That's going to lead me to a burning question)!

    2. We're on to entrees for week 3 of our holiday recipe series. How about something for Thanksgiving? Here's a paleo cranberry sauce link:
    https://www.primalpalate.com/recipe/cranberry-sauce/

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?

Two things: first, did anyone else have any experience with lactation cookies making their little one super gassy and backed up? She started getting like that a couple of days after I began eating the lactation cookies again and then barely passed any stools till last night with a MAJOR blow out. Normally her stool is a liquidy consistency, last night it was more like soft serve. Is that normal? I read thicker than peanut butter then worry but she's never had stool like that!

two: since I've gone dairy free (hidden and not) she's been doing well but I ate garlic toast that came with a salad absentmindedly Yesterday at lunch then realized it probably had butter on it. (Stupid me) she was super fussy at the boob last night and then had her blow out. Could that been from the butter? I didn't think it would be in my milk so fast nor did I think it would make her not like the taste! Or was that probably from being backed up from the cookies maybe? I haven't eaten anything out of my norm!

    THANKS LADIES!

  • Hi ladies - I haven't been over here in forever since DD weaned but I made this the other night and it was so good I wanted to share it with you since it's safe:
Slow cooker Ital stew - Dairy & soy free https://www.familycircle.com/recipes/slow-cooker/chicken-five-ways/
I added 2 chopped up carrots and celery. And I just used the frozen chicken we had around (couple tenderloins, 1 breast, 1 thigh).
H & I just had it w/ garlic bread but I threw in some pasta in the kids bowls.

I would try to go soy free first before cutting something else out.  The 2 proteins look very similar and their bodies sometimes can't differentiate between the two.  My ped suggested to cut out both from the beginning.
I second this. I'm not sure what the pedi's reasoning is for that order of elimination. GL!

Hmm, hard to say. Could you share your lactation cookie recipe? As for the butter, well, if alcohol can show up in your milk within half an hour, I figure milk proteins could show up within half a day. That's just my guess, though, I don't know for sure. Do you eat a lot of garlic? Maybe she didn't like the taste of that. My mom swears I hated it when she ate onions. :)

  • 1). DS will be 16 weeks on Tuesday. We had another round of dr appointments. The rash was so bad that we were at the derm. This week. Apparently, the severe eczema has turned into a bacteria/ staph infection... So little one has been gives more meds to control it. It's been about about 5 days and we have seen drastic improvement that we can stop the benedryl and he is sleeping so much better because he isn't itching anymore. Now to tackle my second issue which is to increase my supply. He started to fight me as he got worst and I went back to work part-time and I can't use my freezer stash, because it has soy or dairy. So, I need to build back up my supply and decrease the supplement. 2. Nothing for thanksgiving. I did by an allergy free cookbook and have tried a few in there and everyone really likes them. 3. No direct questions.
  • @rissa06 Poor baby, and poor mama! I know how it feels to have the freezer stash go to waste, I went through it multiple times (as I cut out more and more foods). It sucks! But maybe you could donate it to a nursling in need. GL getting your supply back up!
  • @jpryber0528 Hmm, nothing looks suspicious to me. Do you eat all of the ingredients regularly? My DS gets gassy when I eat eggs (still!) and some babies are sensitive to oats. I wonder about the brewer's yeast, but I've never heard of a baby reacting to that.
  • Thanks for the kind words @mrscjmb9410! I didn't think that our breastfeeding journey would be what it is, sometimes I forget to cut myself some slack and remember I am learning as we go!! She's feeling better but I think we need to talk to her pedi about upping her Zantac dose, as some of her symptoms are creeping back up!!

@rocknrollfriend-- I think it was definitely garlic that she doesn't like because I had white wine and olive oil garlic shrimp pasta for dinner the night before and leftovers for lunch. I'm pretty sure she hates it! Makes me sad cause I LOVE garlic... Typical Italian !! :((

Aw, that sucks! But at least you might have it figured out. And, as I've told myself many times, it won't last forever. :) Hang in there!
