  • Oh come on, Amy. You'll have to work hard to convince me that most people don't have access to a Y or a rec center. Group swim lessons aren't that expensive, and most places offer them on weekends. Not teaching your 5 year old to play tennis is a fi…

  •  @CJ, I give you props for making sure they're learning, that's the most anyone can do. I just get irritated when people stick their kids in a puddle jumper and call it good. Kids drown or nearly drown at such alarming rates, I don't get not priorit…

  • I'm actually a little disturbed that so many people think it's normal/acceptable for kids who are 5+ to not be able to swim independently. Not that I'm suggesting a 5 year old should be Micheal Phelps, but shouldn't they at least be able to dog padd…
  • Your IL's sound like assholes.
  • Usually around 9 or 9:30. Our alarm goes off at 5 a.m.
  • We stayed on captiva and it was a whole lot of beach.
  • Huh. Today at my sister's country club, my 5 year old repeatedly jumped off the 10 foot high dive into 12 foot deep water while I sat on the other side of the pool and sipped a mimosa. I'm guessing the dad would have been apoplectic about this?
  • There's a great book called The War Play Dilemma that addresses little boys and violent play. It helped me understand what's going on when they do that and find appropriate ways to direct it.
  • Shoot. Now it just occurred to me that I forgot to tip the girl who washed my hair last time I got it cut and colored. Usually, my stylist does the wash but she was busy.

  • OMG, yes. 20%, always.

  • Oh, jeez. That's awful. Wishing them all the best.
  • OK, I have one more. I insist that my kids wear helmets when they ski and horseback ride, but I don't wear one, myself. I'm waiting for them to get old enough to call me out on it.

  • Oh, speaking of parking, here's one. I took the kids to museum two days ago and I parked my SUV in a spot reserved for hybrid vehicles. I felt very, very guilty about it, but it was a free day at the zoo (right next door) and there was NO parking AN…

  • I don't get the no poo thing at all. Alie, I'm sorry your DH is having such a hard time.
  • Spring, it took my kids a while. We got a Strider for my oldest when he turned 2, he wouldn't touch it for a year. Then the summer he turned 3, he figured it out. I think my youngest was about 3, also.

  • I'm team no electronics in restaurants. I don't usually go around judging other families who do it (except one time that was really bad) but I've never done it with my kids.

  • If they're having a reaction, I'd try a mineral sunscreen. Badger is good, so is Burnout. It's expensive, but they don't have the chemicals you find in the grocery store brands, and that's what a lot of people react to.
