The E word - enema

Has anyone done or is thinking of doing an enema for constipation?

I haven't had too much of a problem yet, but I'm scared of what's to come.

In case I get desperate.... Confused

  • nope! Thanks to all-bran, apples, prune/apple juice I'm doing pretty good right now.

  • I haven't thought of it. My apples, apple juice and apple sauce seem to keep the problems away.
  • a friend of mine did an enema with a bunch of friends on a dare.  they competed to see who could hold it in the longest...I don't think she won :)

altogether, she didn't sound too scarred by it, and she wasn't drunk at the time.  I'd go for it--probably good for your colon anyhow!  GL

  • Try dried apricots, they actually taste pretty good and seem to help things along :)

  • I eat that Activa yogurt (or put a cup in a smoothie) at least a few times a week.  I am only stopped up right now because I am so sick that I can't keep food and liquids down.

  • Try Colace...it's OTC and it works just fine ...an enema seems a bit extreme.
  • Enema's can actually make you MORE uncomfortable -- according to the nurses at my Dr's office. They recommend snacking on PLAIN cheerios!

  • Yikes. Emima's scare me. No way!!

  • bump up your fiber intake ... salads, veggies, frosted mini wheats ... beans, like in chili ...
  • If you haven't had much of a problem yet, you may not. I only had that problem the first week of my PNVs and since then, I've been having the opposite problem!

  • I've seen people given enemas in the hospital - it ain't pretty.  Try EVERYTHING else you can think of before resorting to that.  Prunes, fruit juice, coffee, colace, senna, milk of magnesia and lots and lots of water are some of the things I would try first.  Some combo of those should work for 90% of constipation.  And if it's a recurrent problem, you may want to take colace and/or senna on a daily basis along with increasing your fiber intake.
  • A friend of mine did it twice...but it never worked quite the way it was promised. ?I would definitely look into more fiber in your diet, plus Colace & more water if it's becoming that big of a problem.
