help me hide veggies

I have posted on here about ds refusing to eat veggies.  Well now I wanted to know if anyone can help with ideas on hiding veggies in ds food.  I was thinking of using baby food purees in something.  I just don't know to hide them.  He literally won't eat anything good for him.

Re: help me hide veggies

  • Jessica Steinfeld has a book about that. She makes purees and sneaks them into the food. She has a whole cookbook filled with recipes.

  • I throw them into a cheese quesadilla.
  • I grate veggies into pasta sauce and gravy, except I do it for DH not DS haha seriously though...
  • Jessica Sienfeld's book is pretty cool. There is also another cookbook out there similar to hers. There are tons of cool ideas that I never thought of. DS is a good veggie eater but I am anticipating that he wont always be.

  • I put broccoli or spinach into grilled cheese or cheese quesadillas.  Also, DS LOVES these turkey veggies patties:

I make the full recipe and then cook about 16 mini patties, then freeze them.  The heat up perfectly in the microwave in about 80 seconds.

I saw her book at a local Marshalls (or maybe TJ Maxx?) this week for like 1/2 price.

  • I don't like the idea of "sneaking" the veggies in. I don't really see any redeeming value in the Seinfeld book or The Sneaky Chef, the one by the other girl who sued her for stealing it.

Nutritionists and dieticians have looked at it and said the things both of them suggest don't really put enough vegetables into the food to risk the distrust you'll engender in your kids once they figure it out. And some of them end up boosting the fat/sugar content significantly at the same time, completely negating the effects.

With 1yos, it's one thing. They don't know the difference. But the books are actually written with the idea of school age kids in mind, and 10yos aren't stupid. If someone gave me a brownie with spinach in it, I'd be severely piissed, and I like spinach.

Vegetables are a part of every meal. If we have pasta, there is broccoli or zucchini tossed with it. If I make soup, it's full of vegetables. If I make sandwiches, quesadillas, pizza, whatever, the veggies are there. But they aren't hidden. I've done this with my sister's kids for years. They won't eat broccoli at home, but they know the veggies are in stuff at my house, and they have to take a bite, even if they don't finish. Generally, they just eat it because it's too much work to pick it out.

  • I put them in quesadillas, grilled cheese sandwiches, mix a ton into organic mac and cheese. I just found a great vegetable lasagne (Amy's Organic) that has a ton of veggies in it and ds loved it.  I am going to try and make one myself.

I also put them in eggs, mix purees in with his pasta - anywhere that I can get them in without him freaking out I do.
