Milk in a sippy... ?

So, my DD is almost totally on cow's milk (I just BF once/day).  So I keep hearing that they should be off bottles at 1 year...  Anyways, DD gets a bottle before bed.  So do I give her a sippy of milk before bed instead???  It's the last thing we do before she goes to sleep (I know, bad association but she can go to sleep without it - it's just routine).   And she STTN most nights just fine.

TIA!

  • I was told off the bottle by 15 months. We just started to wean the bottles out. I started by weaning the mid day bottles and kept the first AM and the night time bottle (she also got one which usually put her to sleep). Then we broke the Am bottle and then a week after that we broke the pm bottle. It went really well. I think DD was off all bottles by 13. I

  • We went from bottles to sippy also.  It is DS comfort before bed, some may think its bad but it works for us. GL

  • Yes i was told off the bottle by 1 year. I gave her a sippy cup of milk before bed and now she dropped that sippy cup and just goes straight to bed.
  • My pedi says she recommends it by 1 year but in reality few kids do it.  Mine gave up the bottle really easily, we just stopped giving them to her one day and she never complained!  So she was off at just about 1 year. But I wouldn't stress about it.  She clearly knows how to drink out of a sippy and that's important.
  • Holy crap, sorry for all the post...stupid nest gods.

  • At 1 year we went straight to sippys for everything.  Any chance you could replace the milk with water for bedtime?  I think dentists would have a problem with the milk on the teeth and going to sleep.
  • My ped said to keep DD on formula bottles/nursing for another 3 months. We're not moving to milk yet.

  • We were off of bottles at 12 months.  At 11 months, we started switching one bottle at a time to a sippy of milk.  The last bottle to go was the bedtime bottle.  We completely eliminated it.  We did not replace it with a sippy.  I didn't want to him to continue to rely on a bottle/sippy to fall asleep at night.  He was completely fine with the change.

  • I've done this twice.

    Both experiences different.

I think it depends on the kid.

You could try not offering the sippy at bed if you don't want the habit.  She may not even notice.  If she does fine - voila!  You're done.

I tried offering the sippy to Dylan at bed time and he would get PISSED OFF.  He wanted his frigging warm bottle... NOW.  It was a disaster so we went without anything at bed  time.

Jason's different.  He took the sippy lying down on his boppy in my arms (freshly weaned) just fine.  Didn't seem to notice it wasn't a bottle and it wasn't formula.

Good luck with what ever you try!

Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • Shell - I guess that's part of my question.  What's the difference giving DC a bottle of milk, lying in your arms in the boppy or a sippy cup of milk, lying in your arms on the boppy?  My DD takes the sippy & bottle fine.  Just different nipple shape, IMO!

We see DD's pedi in a week so I'll discuss this with him.

    Thanks for everyone's imput!

  • i kept dd on bottles until 19 months...she made such a mess with sippy cups (even "leakproof" cups).  do what you are comfortable with, not everyone else.
