XP: "softening" of cervix at 27w5d...? :(

hey ladies - i could use some guidance on this one.  i just an OB appt and he did a manual cervical check, which he does every 4 weeks or so.  (i have cervical u/s every other appt, staggered, so every 4 weeks as well.  at last look 2 weeks ago my cervix was 3.9, no funneling.)

today the exam really hurt for the first time, and he said that my cervix was softening, and that was something that happened twd the end of pregnancy... he also mentioned that it's great i am beyond the stage of viability... for which i am immensely grateful but i really really don't want these babies to go anywhere for at least another 6 weeks, hopefully more like 8-10.... so the whole convo scared me.  he's not worried enough to rec any specific treatment though, just asked that i come back in one week instead of 2.

(also, i am now spotting from the internal, which has never happened before.)

what have your experiences been with cervical softening?  should i be concerned? :(  i am just a little nervous now...

thanks ladies...

  • did he put you on bedrest? have you gotten your steroid shots? ?both could help. ?i'm sure you're nervous...it's good that you're monitored so closely and remember to call the doctor if anything at all feels any different that "normal" for you in your pregnancy. ?i was on bedrest for 7 weeks after PTL and cervical shortening...so although different from your situation, i did have 7 weeks after they found something and that made all the difference in the world for me and my babies. ?stay well and keep cooking those babies.

  • I second getting the steroid shots too. Did they do an internal this time to check for length and funneling? I don't want to scare you but cervical changes can happen pretty quickly. Definitely go to the doctor if you notice anything different.

I started having contractions the night before a regular appointment. I was pretty funneled by 24 1/2 wks and remained on hospital bedrest until mine were delivered.

They never mentioned "softening" though. I know I was a fingertip dilated.

It's so hard...everyone is different. My friend was walking around dilated at 2 cm for about a month (not PG with twins) and she ended up going 1 day past her duedate.

Just keep cooking those babies and if you feel like you should go to the doctor than definitely go.

  • I was put on strict bedrest at 23w6d due to a shortened and softened cervix.  I spent 9 weeks on bedrest and delivered at 32w6d due to a UTI.  I always had bleeding after they would check my cervix (both after an "internal" exam and the cervix u/s) so I think that is totally normal -- mine would ususally last less than a day.   My cervix was a 4 at 20w and then went down to 1.8 when I was put on bedrest.  It pretty much stayed there until right before I delievered.  I was also 1cm dilated from about 28w until I went into labor and I had the steriod shots at 26w.

Take it easy!  If you are not on bedrest I would still try to lay down as much as possible and let your DH do stuff around the house.  Take care!

  • I would definitely take it easy.  I mean EASY!  Get off your feet.  Try to rest as much as you can.  It helps immensely.  I was on bedrest for 6 weeks and I wouldn't have made it that long if I didn't take it seriously.  Your cervix can change so quickly.  I know I was shocked when mine changed so fast.  Definitely take it easy until your next appt and go in if you feel anything different.  Talk to your Dr about the shots and see if you can get those next time.
  • From all of us moms who had our babies too early. Take it easy. Don't risk it. Just keep your feet up and relax. I am sure they will stay put for a long time. I was on bedrest for 5 weeks at 28 weeks, and had them at 33 weeks.
  • My cervix went from a perfect closed 4, to funneling and dialated within 5 days.  I was fortunate to be early enough to have a cerclage.  Stay horizontal as much as possible, no sex, no lifting. I would demand a vaginal ultrasound asap as well, as that is the only true measurement.  Also,  like the other girls have said get your steroid shots as an "insurance policy" just in case.  Good luck! Hang in there!
  • DId they put you on BR? WHen's your next cervical check? It needs to be WAY more frequently than every 4 weeks when you've already had softening. I'd call your OB and discuss this in more detail with him/her...do you have a peri? Honestly, I'm concerned that no one mentioned BR for you, etc. You definately want to keep them in as long as possible. Keep us posted!
  • thank you so much for your advice ladies - i can't tell you how much i appreciate it!  i spoke to the dr and i'm feeling slightly reassured, but still thrown for a loop.

he said that this can be somewhat normal with mult pgs and we are going to keep a really close eye on it.  told me to come in tomorrow if i felt at all weird or was still spotting.  he doesn't believe that this is an indication of an immediate problem, just something that could lead in that direction but hopefully will not.  he said i am not even a tiny bit dilated, so that's good...

i am, however, now on modified BR.  i have two more days of work which he says is ok but after that it's as much couch/bed time as possible and as of today no more lifting, bending, etc. (although i barely do that as is).

i think today just made me realize how fast things can change and how scary it would be to deliver anytime really soon... even though i'm ok right now, it was a wakeup call as far as taking it easy, etc.  i've been laying on the couch all day, so so far so good...

thanks again.  i really love this board. :)
