How to contain the daiper smell?

Now that DS is eating table foods his diapers are beyond gross smelling. We have a Diaper Champ which I have raved about up until a few months ago because now the thing eminates stench from it. Granted, we only empty it when its full or close to but I've even tried wrapping poopy diapers in a scented baggie before tossing them in the diaper champ to no avail. DS's nursery stinks so bad most of the time and it makes it way worse when we have to empty the Diaper Champ. We have an air purifier in his room but that seems to make no difference. I've been thinking about buying a diaper Genie. Do these work better?

  • Apparently I need to learn how to spell " Diaper "

  • We put diapers in a walmart bag and toss in the kitchen trash.  We don't notice a smell, and we've begged friends to be honest with us, too, and they say they don't smell anything either.

  • Plastic absorbs oders over time. So it's possible that the champ is actually the source of the smell. You can try cleaning it with baking soda, but the smell usually won't come out.

One option to really cut back on the smell would be to dump the poop in the toilet. Good for the environment and good for smells.

Hell I am dyslexic I always spell like that Stick out tongue

Seriously though you probably need to be changing it a lot more often.  We do every 48 hrs and we have stick odor thing on the lid.  That is what works for us!!!!

Oh and we lysol it every time we empty it!!!!!!!!!!!

  • we had the same problem--we started emptying the dirty diapers into the toilet and it has made a WORLD of difference.  no more smell, at all.  I don't know why it took us so long to figure this out.
  • DH and I also have a Diaper Champ and we absolutely LOVE it.

When we change out the bags, we sprinkle a little baby powder or baking soda in the bottom of the can along with a little ground cinnamon and the smell is completely covered up, except for a few seconds when we turn it over when we put a new diaper in it.

We also clean it with Lysol and Clorox wipes every other weekend.

ETA: We change the bag on Monday and Thursday nights (trash pickup is Tuesday and Friday where we live).

  • I use cloth diapers, but after I shake the poop into the toilet I sprinkle a little baking soda on the diaper directly.  I also throw a clean wash cloth with scented oil (tea tree oil is the BEST) in the can every a.m. and have no odor problem.

Ditto clean the champ with lysol wipes weekly, sprinkel with backing soda in the pail and trash bag.

  • I put DS's dirty diapers in a small ziploc bag and that seems to work.
  • The actual smell that you are smelling is from the bacteria so I would use something like a heavy bleach spray to clean out the inside.  We also have a Diaper Champ and have loved it.  I also started to notice the stench, even after emptying it so I started buying the air freshner to attach under the lid and that with the bleach seems to be working. I also started using regular trash bags as the insert.  These are designed more for trash smells and they are a lot cheaper! If it was still nasty I would smell it for sure with these pg hormones!
