Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Question from 6-12 board, Early riser

My DD waked up anywhere between 4:30-5:30 and we have tried everything to make her sleep later it feels like.  She goes to bed at 7:15 and it is hard to push it back much later.

Is there hope, I feel like I'm never going to sleep till 6 again.  Any suggestions for helping her to sleep later?

If you had an early riser will did your DC sleep later as they got older?????

Re: Question from 6-12 board, Early riser

  • In the Ferber book it says to push their schedule up.  Morning nap later, lunch later, dinner later, and bedtime later.  He says it will be a gradual change.

My DS is 1 tomorrw and still gets up between 4-530 at the latest.  He is in day care though so we can't really adjust his schedule all that much.

I usually go to bed by 830 just so I am not exhausted the next day!

  • DS tends to wake early 5:30 or 5:15  but then for no reason will sleep till 6:30 or even 7:00. It hasn't really changed since he was 7 months. I would say if your DD is waking because she is hungry then I would make sure she gets a bottle right before bed..  Wish I was for helpfull
  • when DD used to wake up early (although it wasn't every day), i would go in and give her the binkie and put on the sound & light machine and she would fall back asleep.

we have this sound machine and i know a lot of people on the board use it too.  https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=14643125

  • We went through that for a few months too. I think my daughter was waking out of hunger. ?But eventually she was able to sleep until 6 or 7 w/o waking. ?It stinks but it shouldn't last forever. ?

I had a rule that we never left her room before 5 am. ?If she woke at 4 then I would feed her but we'd stay in her room w/ the lights off and no talking/playing until at least 5. ?I just couldn't face the world any earlier than that. ? Sometimes she'd go back to sleep but most days she would just rock with me in the chair quietly. ?

  • I had the same problem with DD.  It took a while but I was able to push her back and now she is sleeping until 7.  She goes to sleep between 730 and 8, now it is more like 8.  The biggest thing for us was to not go get her if she woke up that early.  The earliest she did was 530.  I started slow and would wait until 6 to get her, once she got used to 6 I pushed it a little later.
  • Eli used to be a really early riser too.  As he got older and started dropping naps, he started sleeping later.  Now he sleeps until around 7.  He's in daycare, and crashes when he gets home, so it was impossible for us to push back his bedtime.  If he does wake early some mornings, I don't go up there and he usually falls back asleep for a little bit.

  • DD usually wakes up at 5:30 or 6, but sometimes she will sleep in till 7am. When she was youger I wouldn't go up there until at least 6am. She would sit and play quietly in her crip and sometimes put herself back to sleep. Other times I would go up there and sleep with her upstairs on the couch. Now we just kind of have to get up, or I co-sleep with her until its a reasonable hour (like 6:30am).
  • DD went through this phase when she was between 7 and 9 months old.? No matter what we did she would wake up between 4:30 and 5:00.? We ended up putting her down early (between 6 and 7) so she would atleast be well rested.? Then one day she started sleeping in until 6:00 or later.? To this day she still goes to bed around 6:30 and wakes around 6:30 (7 if we are lucky:).

I know this doesn't really help--other than to give you hope for the future!? But honestly the thing that really helped me was just deciding to go with it and not worry about it.? The early morning became our time together and I would go to bed early (8:30ish) so I wasn't tired. Hang in there, it will get better.

I have the same experience.  Like the other posters have said, I set a time. Anythime before 5:30 I would treat like the middle of the night (little interaction, lights off, etc.).  Anytime after 5:30, I considered morning.  I also would always give him some time to see if he would fall back to sleep on his own. I fiddled with bedtime and had the best luck with 7:00. This went on for months, but then at around 11 months he magically started sleeping until 6:30 or sometimes even 7:00!

So, yes there is hope.  I will say that anytime he gets thrown off (sick, travel, teething, bed too late) he reverts back to his old pattern.  Good luck.  Hang in there -- I know it can be exhausting.
