Some of you may know that IRL I am a food safety lawyer. I'm working on the peanut butter salmonella outbreak, and just wanted to reiterate to you all: please avoid peanut butter products (jars of pb are ok, but products containing pb may be tainted, such as cookies, granola & power bars, crackers, ice cream, etc). Check FDA.gov for updates on specific products, and when in doubt, throw it out.
(BTW, my second day back at work after maternity leave and I had to do an interview with NBC Nightly News on this issue, so I am pretty overwhelmed!)
Re: NMR: PSA about peanut butter items
To be honest, I wouldn't. Out of an abundance of caution perhaps, but the outbreak is still ongoing and therefore new products can be added to the list everyday. This strain of salmonella is particularly rough for kids-- 20% of the 500 illnesses so far are children under 5 years old. (50% of the illnesses are under 16.) And so far this strain seems resistant to heat, so baking may not kill it.
Sorry to be a party pooper. Just my two cents.
Dang! Ok, you talked me out of them
any word on the dates of the products?
meaning, we have nutter butter cookies in the house and had been eating them, with no issues...should we toss them?
Thanks...I knew there was actually a benefit to never having time to go to the grocery store...the only pb items we potentially have in the house are from WAY long ago. Scary I know, but hey a benefit I never thought I'd be happy about!
