My mother's name was Sheila, and she passed away 5 years ago. I would love to name my daughter after her (and it actually flows well with the last name), but I'm worried that the name sounds too..um....80's hooker???
It's not my favorite name, but I don't think it sounds like a hooker name, either. Obviously, the name has meaning to you. I don't see anything wrong with using it. If you're really unsure of it, maybe use it as a middle name instead.
Definitely not 80s hooker! I wouldn't say that at all.
It does seem outdated. I'm not sure that would be enough to persuade me not to use it though, if I were you, since it has such a special meaning for you.
That is a great name if it has meaning to you than the heck with what other people may think. Your daughter can be proud that she was named after her grandmother. If you are questioning the name use it as a middle name.
I don't think it sounds like an 80's hooker at all. Not even a little bit.
I do think it sounds like a woman in her 50's or 60's -- since that's the time period when the name was popular. But I don't think that's a bad thing! I think your daughter would love being named after her grandmother.
I don't think 80's hooker at all. If you and your DH like it and it has meaning for you, you should use it! Like the pp said, it will be a super cute name because its not popular now.
I know for me having a name that has the meaning that this name does for you plus it not being too popular means more than it being out dated. Your cute little girl will make the name. Good luck!

I can't say it's my favorite name in the world, but I really like that it's in honor of your mother. If you like the name, use it as her first name. Or if you're not crazy about it, use it as a middle name. Best of luck.

It's not my favorite name, but it's not trashy either like you fear. I picture a middle age woman when i think of this name; it would make a beautiful middle name to carry on your mother's legacy.
I actually reminds me of the Will & Grace episode re: the name Sheila sounding like a slut's name. It's definitely not a bad name at all but I would use it as a middle name.

This is the name of my Best Friend's mom. So I actually like Sheila. If you are naming the baby after your mom and ya'll were close I think it is a great idea. What is the middle name? If I might ask.
I would definitely go for it. No it does not sound like an 80's hooker name.
The only Sheila I've ever known was really sweet, and had gorgeous dark hair and dark eyes, so I have a good association with it.
If you are worried about using the name, could you use a name that means the same thing? Here's what wikipedia said about Sheila...
Sheila is a common given name for a female, taken from the Gaelic name S?le/S?le, which is believed to be a Gaelic form of Julia or Cecilia. Like "Cecil" or "Cecilia",
the name means "Smart and Wise", from the Latin caecus. Is also the
colloquial term for a woman in some Commonwealth countries.
I like Sheila. The first thing I thought of was how a sheila is Australian slang for a woman. It definitely does not make me think of a hooker. I say use it if you like it. I'm not one for trendy or so called up to date names anyway. I think it is better if you have a name that is different but still familiar and not made up.
I definitely do not think of it as a hooker name. Every Sheila I've ever known, though, was in my parents' generation, so I sort of associate it with that age group. I think it's great idea to give your daughter a name that has a special meaning to you, though. So, I would probably make it her middle name.
i don't love the name, but it doesn't sound 80's hooker to me. maybe a bit 80's in general but no hooker. i agree with potentially using it as a mn. if YOU dont like it for a first. it's not horrible and i approve of it for a fn due to the meaning to you as long as you like it
I love the name Sheila! Love it. I don't think it sounds hookerish at all. It's a name you don't here very often, but it's not bizarre. The fact that it's a family name makes me love it even more.
I was considering Lois to honor my mother and worried about the same thing (not necessarily hookerish, but I thought it was too dated). I think we're going to go with it as a middle name b/c we have another family name we're going to use as the first name. Sheila is cute--if you love it, go for it!
Re: Honest opinions, please: Sheila
I think this. Sorry, maybe as a mn?
Definitely not 80s hooker! I wouldn't say that at all.

Hope this helps.

Ditto this.

I don't like it, but it obviously has a lot of meaning for you. Maybe use it as a middle name instead?
Or go ahead and use it and screw what random people think!
How about a variation of Sheila if you're not 100% on it?

That is what I'm thinking of doing if we ever have a girl. My late Grandmother was Marion so we are considering Mariana.
Ditto, too!
Isn't that slang for women in Australia?
I like the fact that it is uncommon. If she wants, she can always use a derivative.
