We're going to a wedding in Key West in May, about a week before DD's 1s birthday. I am going to cash in airline miles to go, so my question is, would you fly NY-Miami, have a couple hour layover then fly to Key West on a puddle jumper with DC or should we just fly to Miami, hang out there for a day or two (I have friends & family there) and rent a car from there to drive the rest of the way?
Re: Driving v. flying to Key West with 1 yr. old
I'm torn. I've been to Key West, and a friend of mine goes there almost every year. The drive sucks, from what I hear. It's one lane each way and it's a HUGE LONG bridge (I hate driving on bridges). But, the runway at the airport ends at the ocean. And that freaks me out too.
My friend's recommendation is to take the ferry. She said it's always a blast, and it's cheaper than both the driving and flying option. Plus, LO would be able to be up and about a little bit at least.
It depends entirely on whether your child copes well with car rides. Mine does not. I've made that drive, isn't it fairly long? Like 4 or 5 hours? If it were within my budget to take the puddle jumper the rest of the way, I'd do that in a heartbeat.?
I've flown with DS before, there were three flights each way to get to my sister's city in South Carolina. And that was honestly less stressful than driving 3 hours to my parents house for Christmas.
But this is all because my son haaaaates the car. Not all babies do!
What? Awesome! Did not know about this ferry! Maybe Key West will go back on our list of places to go with DS. I eliminated it based on that drive.
That's what she said they usually take. If you have a hard time finding one, let me know, and I'll get more information from her
