I'm kind of both.. I work, but stay home with him during the day... I make my schedule work with Dh's so one of us is always with him. I make an income... Not the kind I used to make, but still bring in $$$...

Ditto this pretty much to the T.
In a lot of ways, I have the best of both worlds. Although it takes LOTS of creative juggling & running myself ragged a good bit of the time.

I'm going to be another half and half. My business does not keep me busy full time right now (although in the past it has definitely been busier). I will probably end up needing help one or two days a week, but for some clients I will be able to bring the kid along if it works out OK.
I'm a former traveling sales exec of 9 years who got sick of the road (and of banging my head against the all too present glass ceiling). I too was a SAHW like kat since our wedding over 2 yrs ago. I was trying to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up when we discovered we were pregnant.
C will very likely be our only child, so I want to SAH indefinately until such time as it feels right to do something else. I may go back to school part time to get a second degree when he starts school and do something totally different. I miss bringin' home the bacon and having all that extra cash to save and play with. Budgets have never been part of my financial picture until recently.
p.s. SAHM is infinitely harder than my former career. By far.
I didn't know how to answer the poll. I am currently working outside the home, but gave my notice a few weeks ago. My last day is Friday. Then I will SAH. I am excited and very nervous. I am very happy that I tried to go back to work. I have been back for over 3 months and know I am making the right decision. I would even be tempted to work part time if it was a workable option.
I just quit my job to SAH a couple of weeks ago when I was supposed to return to work from maternity leave. I had planned to go back PT but when it came time to do it, I wasn't comfortable with any of the childcare options I'd found so I quit.
I work full-time outside the home. This could change given the current economy. I would probably be able to stay home for 6-12 months if I get laid off and then would have to go back to work.
I can't answer because I do both. DH and I are fortunate enough to be able to rotate the days that we work at home so that we both go in to the office a few days a week and someone is always home working with Reagan.
We don't have the baby, yet, but I responded anyway, since I know I will be going back to work. I don't know if I would have the patience to SAH (of course, my mind may change after I had the kiddo). Plus we have a mortgage to pay - I mean, we could do it on one salary, but it would be very tight. If anything, I might do a reduced schedule (70% or 80%). The problem in my profession is that sometimes you don't see the reduced schedule all the time (but you sure see the reduced pay all the time!!).

This was me also, although my only option was to go back full-time. Fortunately, we had a savings that allowed us to get by financially with only DH working. I am also in grad school, so it has been nice to only have to concentrate on school and baby rather than school, baby, and work. I'll graduate in May and look for a job that will begin with the 2009-2010 school year and DD will begin daycare. This is not my first choice, but is necessary financially. I would love to be able to continue staying at home, preferably until DD starts school.
I'm another half and half-er. I work at my mom's as we're trying to start up our organizing business, so I'm helping her organize her home as practice. Charlotte stayed home with me until this past September, when I put her in MDO three days a week. So, I still get to spend tons of time with her but also make some money working for my mom.
However, we can't do this forever, so I'm really working on getting things going with the business. We're having to put her in "real" daycare (as opposed to a church-based MDO program) starting in August so that I can really focus on getting clients. Since I'll be my own boss, though, I'm going to be like Callmekel and bpaullo and the others in that as long as I'm bringing in enough money, I can have the flexibility to create my own schedule. I'll be a working mom, but will be able to SAH on days I need/want to without having to answer to anyone else. I just have to pray very hard that my business is successful!
