True... but there is water in foods that are cooked too. And I'd assume the people who LIVE there are used to it and immune to many of the things we're not. I wouldn't go.

  • No! I've heard too many horror stories about the food quality / water there. I would hate to be THAT sick and pregnant!

Oh I wouldn't go either, for the simple reason that I have no desire to visit Central America. I dunno, it's up to the OP.

  • If we could afford it we would be going to Mexico in March!  The water you drink will be bottled so I don't think thats a concern.  And I would stick to food you know or maybe stay in a timeshare/condo and do your own grocery shopping and cooking.  I don't think it will be a problem, goodluck and I'm jealous!

I agree. We went to Cabo for our honeymoon and I have NO desire to go back to Mexico.  But she did ask for our opinions, even though it's obviously up to her! hehe

  • We went to Mexico while I was either 6 or 8 weeks pregnant. ?I didn't have any problems. ?I ate the food, drank bottled water. ?We spent time in Cabo, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta. ?

  • I wouldn't but I have a sensitive stomach so I *know* I'd be one of the people who gets montezuma's revenge. I just picture Charlotte from the SATC movie. :)

  • If there is water in the food and its cooked it will no longer be harmful.  I've been to mexico multiple times and have never gotten sick.  If you go to a resort there are usually tons of "american" choices.  I wouldn't go out and order the local seafood platter.  As with any restaurant you will never be 100% sure how they handle your food in Mexico or anywhere else.  If its a real concern do a condo.  There are Grand Mayans/Mayan Palaces all over mexico, they have their own kitchens and lots of other amenities.  I would do it!

I really just LOL'ed.  I thought the same thing!!!

  • I would wait and put off the vacation for later.
  • I go to Mexico SEVERAL times a year and I have two trips planned for this spring.  If you want to go, go.  It's not what it was 10 years ago.

  • My in-laws are planning a trip for us all in June for their wedding anniversary.  We are most likely going to Cabo.  I will be a little over 6 months pregnant.  We asked our doctor at our last appointment and she has ZERO problem with it whatsoever...and said to go have fun!!
  • I just got back from Carayes, Mexico, I was 8 weeks pg the week we were there, and I had no issues. I stayed away from the water of course, and ice in drinks, but no tummy issues or otherwise. I came back with a bit of a tan, and much more relaxed then when we left. Go for it.
  • Stick with an all-inclusive and you will be fine. I have been to two...Riu Palace in Playa del Carmen and Dreams in Cabo. Both were really nice an no one in our groups (5 of us at Riu and 13 at Dreams) had any problems with any food or drink. Sincy you are pregnant, I would avoid any excursions outside of the resort though since there is not as much control over what you are eating and drinking. If we had the money, DH and I would be going back to Dreams this summer if we had the money to do so.

  • Thanks Ladies. still torn on the whole idea. oh how I want to bask in the sun on the beach, but w/out a margarita and the possibility of montezumas revenge..the cons are starting to outweigh the pros.

How about picking a beachy locale within the U.S. if you are worried about the water?

  •  I had a harder time at the Bahamas than I did in Mexico! You would be surprised how American-ised Mexico is, they have a lot of American restraunts and stuff.
  • I would. We are going away this spring for a babymoon (well, actually a very belated honeymoon that we couldn't have for several reasons) and one of the possible destinations was Mexico. I'm saying 'was' because we won't be going there. My 1 year visa expires in these days and if I go out I have to ask for another visa (which is no problem to get but time wasting) to enter the States again... so no Mexico for us.

  • We went to Mexico last month, I was fine. I was a careful to only drink bottled water and I avoided cheese and dairy (since it's not always pasturized in Mexico). Just like with any American city, you size up the places you choose to eat at and decide if they seem sketchy or not.

As for laying on the beach to relax....make sure you stay at a place with a private beach. I couldn't even get through a page of my book without vendors walking up trying to sell me stuff (every couple minutes there was someone in front of me waving their goods).

I prefer Hawaii for a beach vacation....just my opinion! There are cheap last minute deals to HI this time of year (we booked a trip there last February 2 weeks before we went, and found plane tickets for $300 each roundtrip).

  • We've been to mexico before.  You can drink the water at most of the larger resorts, but I still wouldn't take the chance.  We will stay in the US if we go anywhere.

  • Nope - I wouldn't and am not going to Mexico for a Babymoon. ?We are planning a trip at the end of March and were seriously considering Mexico until two things happened: first, the travel agent told us to be careful of the water and even brush our teeth with bottled water (even though we were looking at some pretty nice resorts); second, DH asked me if I'd be ok in a Mexican hospital if I needed to see a doctor for any reason. ?Not knowing what the medical system is like in Mexico (or most other countries, for that matter), we have chosen to stay stateside and go to south Florida.

  • if you stay at a resort, all of their water will be purified and suitable for drinking.  go!!!  you won't get another chance for something like this for quite some time!
  • I wouldn't babymoon in any country without a good healthcare system during my pregnancy...what if, god forbid, you start experiencing some sort of symptoms that require medical attention? I don't know what hospitals are like in Mexico, but I don't think they're similar to hospitals in the U.S...
  • I wouldn't be as concerned about the water/food, especially if your staying somewhere touristy. I would be concerned w/ the medical care, if something were to happen to you.

what cons? my only con would be the possibility of needing some sort of medical care. MOST large resorts and AIs have their very own water treatment facilities on locale to ensure clean drinking/cooking/bathing water for everyone there. mexico is perfectly safe. millions of people go every year and never get sick. times have really changed from the whole "never drink water in mexico" from when my grandparents went 30 years ago.

ditto pp - we were planning a trip to mexico and my doc said not to.  he said it wasn't even the water he was concerned with, it was more the medical care if anything should happen.  so we're staying in the states and heading south trying to chase some sun here!

  • I would go! I go every year and have never gotten sick...just be smart about where you eat and drink. Bottled water only, just to be safe. Depend where you are going and the time of year you do not want to go June-September which is monsoon season. If you are staying at a nice resort you will be just fine. I went to Cabo when I was 28 weeks pregnant (in Dec. '06) and let me tell you I loved sitting on the beach drinking my virgin drinks and soaking up the rays---thinking about it being freezing at home. Go but be smart about it! :)
  • I'm going on a cruise with DH and in-laws at 20 weeks.  I'm a bit nervous but want to take advantage of it now :)  I say, go for it!!!!
