Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Question about finger foods

I've been giving ds finger foods (puffs, shredded cheese, cheerios, toast, and steamed fruit).  I'm still giving him pretty small pieces.  The pieces of toast and fruit are probably a little smaller than a cheerio.  Are you giving bigger pieces?  I'm wondering if I should, but sometimes he doesn't chew the food all that well so I'm nervous to.  I saw an 11 month old this weekend who was taking bites off a slice of deli meat her parents offered.  I don't see that happening with ds any time soon and I'm wondering if should be working on it more.

Re: Question about finger foods

  • Good question. I'd like to know myself.

I've been giving really tiny pieces, such has a smushed half of a pea. Guess I'm just paranoid.

DD doesn't like to take finger foods. She likes to play with them instead. And she give me "the look" when I try to put it to her lips.

  • we started table foods at 8m.  We started small but once i realized he can handle it then i just gave him bigger pieces.  If you think your baby can handle it try it.   For me personally there are very few things i really cut up very small for him now.  But thats just how our baby handles food.
  • Today DD tried American Cheese from the deli counter for the first time. I broke off about a 1/5 of it and let her try to feed herself. She loved it. We also gave her a saltine for the first time yesterday when we were at the diner for brunch. She did well with that too. I started giving DD bigger things slowly. She now eats larger pieces of banana. I've also given her those biter biscuit cookies & half of bage, which I think she likes because she can just hold it and gnaw at it on her pace. I keep offering her different stuff. Sometimes she eats, other times -like last week when I tried steamed peas- she just opened her mouth and let the food drop out. My assumption is eventually she'll like the texture and eat it.

  • I guess it depends on the food too.  We tried smushed peas last week and he choked on them.
