Ben has barely gained any weight since about 8/9 months, which I know is when he became really active. ?He's grown 2 inches and about a pound since then. So he's still off the charts for height and about 60th percentile for weight ?Pedi is not at all concerned.
This is what he eats in a typical day:
Breakfast: 1 Yo-Baby yogurt, 1/2- 1 full organic blueberry waffleSnack- Cheerios (if he only ate 1/2 waffle)Lunch- 1 stage 2 jar fruit and a big bowl of baby oatmealSnack- Puffs or CheeriosDinner- 2 stage 2 jars of veggies, 1 veggie sausage or 1-2 veggie chicken nuggersSnack- Gerber crunchies or puffsBefore bed- bowl of baby oatmeal
I also give him water or watered down juice with every meal (usually water) and trying milk here and there since he is FINALLY getting the hang of the sippy cup....
I have tried tofu, cheese, fresh veggies & fruits, made my own purees, ?edamame, just about ANYTHING we are eating and he makes a face and throws it off his try. ?He won't even eat stage 3 foods. ?It either has to be a pureed jar of food or something pretty crunchy or chewy. ?I am nervous to stop BF because I am afraid he will not get the nutrition he needs.
I try giving him something "new" every day, but it's always a waster. ?I know kids go through stages- but is it normal for him to refuse fresh food like this?? I've been trying to make my own food since he was 7 months, but he HATES everything unless it's in a jar. ?The only fresh fruit I could ever get him to eat was watermelon and he won't even eat that now.
So...normal? ?Abnormal? ?Talk to the pedi or just keep trying? ?I hate to give him veggie chicken nuggets almost every night, but when he refuses most other proteins, I am just thankful he'll at least eat those- is this ok?
Thanks for listening and any advice you have would be appreciated!!
Re: Incredibly picky eater at 13 months- already??
Hmmm....its definitely "normal" for kids to go through stages where they are picky about certain foods. My concern is that you are still feeding him stage 2 baby food......he really should be on more solids by now.....have you spoken to your pedi about your "menu?" I personally know that my pedi would not allow me to continue giving jarred baby food at 13 months. My DS was on ALL solid food by 8 months......
What does your pedi say about BFing still?? I guess my pedi's office is very "modern," but they really want kids off all bottles/formula/breastmilk by 12-13 months........
I think the veg. chick nuggets are fine.....like you said, you need to give him whatever he will eat. Have you tried pasta, mac&cheese, etc?? What about giving him the contents of chicken noodle soup (with or without the actual soup base.....)
What about canned veggies? Those are really soft and you can get salt-free ones (which is what we buy.....)
GL!
Tried mac & cheese, pasta, grilled cheese etc...no go! ?Pedi is fine with me continuing to nurse and was fine with what he is eating- she said he'll figure it out eventually. ?I'm just frustrated!
Good idea about the salt-free canned veggies- I didn't know they made them salt-free- I will look for those and try them out...Thanks!!
It's very common for 13-month-olds to be picky eaters, but not so common for them to still be eating mostly pur?ed foods. I'm not sure what you can do besides keep trying to introduce more solids, since it can take 10-15 times for kids to like new foods. I know my DD has surprised me a few times by liking foods she hated months ago, or hating foods she once loved. Your DS has been eating pur?ed foods for so long that it might be a harder habit to break than it is for younger babies.
It might help if you try to give him different solid foods at snacktime instead of mealtime since he's probably less hungry then. He may be more willing to experiment and play around with different foods if he doesn't need instant gratification.
DD's favorite foods are tofu, any kind of fruit, and anything with cheese -- but I know you've already tried all those.
Good luck!
The WHO recommends breastfeeding for two years, and the AAP also encourages extended breastfeeding. There's nothing wrong with continuing breastfeeding as long as both mom and baby want to do so. I'm still breastfeeding DD at 14 months.
I feel your pain!!! Our kid hates everything but veggies, oatmeal, yogurt and fruit. She loves cruncy things too, try these out, i just got them and she LOVES them and they are healthy.
Kashi Oatmeal Raisin Flax Seed Cookie, it tastes like a cookie but is good for them
Quaker granola bits, its chewy granola bar bites, she loves those!
At least those will give him some more varierty and are healthy.
