I made the mistake of telling my dad of a couple names we are thinking of naming our boy, which he apparently shared with my stepmother. Here is a portion of the email she sent me this morning:
"[Your dad] told me about the name Martin you suggested. I ,unfortunately,
associate it with a TV show I watched when I was approx 10 or 12 called
Spin and Marty. Martin was a nerdy rich kid. But if that is what you
lilke that is sfine. I thought of the simple names like Mark or Matthew.
I also thought of Keeler."
Gee thanks lady, I guess I better poll everyone about the freakin TV shows they watched FIFTY YEARS AGO.
Re: This is why you don't tell anyone your name ideas
Haha...everyone's a critic.
Yeah that's why were not telling anyone either, till she's here. Otherwise everyone's gonna give there opinion and not that it matters but once she's here and her name is set, they'll be no more opinions LOL
LOL!?

Oh godness...
I'm sure you could think of a few things to say about her name, and associate it with something!
Martin is actually my baby's middle name and it's after my Dad. I think it's a great name!

ha ha good suggestions everyone! I don't even feel the need to respond to her nonsense but if I do those are some good ideas of what to say.
huh, are you serious?!?!
I'd just reply and tell her that you are considering the name Martin, not Marty. Besides, that show went off the air in 1957 after just 2 years. You should remind her that your child is growing up over fifty years after that show went off the air.
She's so creative with Mark and Matthew, by the way. And Keeler sounds like a foreigner trying to say Killer.
Hilarious. ?I had a very similar reaction, only in person! ?My uncle-in-law made a face at our names and said, "I would probably pick something like.." and then get a couple suggestions.
In respose I made a similar face and said, "It's a good thing it's my baby then!"
His suggestions weren't bad, but I was till annoyed!?
I hate that you are going through this but I am glad I am not the only one! We kept our choices a secret until we found out if it was a boy or girl. Once we did I let the fam know which we were having and our name.
My mother called me and drilled me about where it came from, why we chose it, etc., but I said this is your grandson...so you have until June to get used to his name! it didn't go over well, but I was not going to let them tell me what to name my child or hear more about it.
Some things you have to stand your ground on...and others...well pick your battles wisely!
