2nd Trimester

This is why you don't tell anyone your name ideas

I made the mistake of telling my dad of a couple names we are thinking of naming our boy, which he apparently shared with my stepmother. Here is a portion of the email she sent me this morning:

"[Your dad] told me about the name Martin you suggested. I ,unfortunately,
associate it with a TV show I watched when I was approx 10 or 12 called
Spin and Marty. Martin was a nerdy rich kid. But if that is what you
lilke that is sfine. I thought of the simple names like Mark or Matthew.
I also thought of Keeler."

Gee thanks lady, I guess I better poll everyone about the freakin TV shows they watched FIFTY YEARS AGO.

Re: This is why you don't tell anyone your name ideas

  • I'd just say "Thanks-those are great names you thought of!  Not sure if my dad told you or not, but we ARE decided already on Martin.  Hopefully our baby will be so cute you'll forget all about the tv show."

  • LOL. Priceless.
  • Keeler? Your stepmom is a nut job...LOL  Tell your stepmom you really like keeler because it reminds of keebler and you think of cookies.
  • Write her back and kindly remind her that it's YOUR baby, not hers, and although you appreciate her suggestions, you happen to really like the name Martin, and you're sure once the baby comes she'll get over her past associations with it.
  • haha, yeah we finally decided to tell our parents what we picked for our girl's name (which is NOT changing no matter what), and when they told his aunt she says that our name is the name of an actress from the 50s (?) that was beautiful but a slut and a murderer.  Gee thanks!

  • Haha...everyone's a critic.

  • Yeah that's why were not telling anyone either, till she's here. Otherwise everyone's gonna give there opinion and not that it matters but once she's here and her name is set, they'll be no more opinions LOL

    LOL!?

  • i find it funny when people assume you want to please them with your name choice... or when they assume you even want their opinion!

  • Yeah, exactly!!!!  This is why I keep quiet until the end.

  • thanks for re-assuring me that not telling anyone is the way to go.  I feel guilty not telling my parents, but just my luck they'd come back with something even wackier than what your stepmom said.  And Keeler ~ seriously?  Sounds like Killer ~ not a name i want associated with my baby LOL.
  • Oh godness...

I'm sure you could think of a few things to say about her name, and associate it with something!

Martin is actually my baby's middle name and it's after my Dad. I think it's a great name!

  • this is exactly why we're keeping it a secret.  i don't want to hear about why people may or may not like the name.  by the time they hear it then it won't matter. it'll be done!  and we like it so who cares!

  • ha ha good suggestions everyone! I don't even feel the need to respond to her nonsense but if I do those are some good ideas of what to say.

  • That is really annoying! I would tell her that actually you were going for a Martin from a TV show, but it was the Martin Lawrence "Martin" show. ;)
  • Indifferent

    huh, are you serious?!?!

  • I'd just reply and tell her that you are considering the name Martin, not Marty. Besides, that show went off the air in 1957 after just 2 years. You should remind her that your child is growing up over fifty years after that show went off the air.

She's so creative with Mark and Matthew, by the way. And Keeler sounds like a foreigner trying to say Killer.

  • Oh my god!! All that I can do is laugh at what you wrote. How funny. Where did she get the name Keeler????
  • Hilarious. ?I had a very similar reaction, only in person! ?My uncle-in-law made a face at our names and said, "I would probably pick something like.." and then get a couple suggestions.

In respose I made a similar face and said, "It's a good thing it's my baby then!"

His suggestions weren't bad, but I was till annoyed!?

  • Keeler?  That's definitely original and most likely not from a show like a million years ago!  Sorry she was so pushy and negative!

  • I hate that you are going through this but I am glad I am not the only one! We kept our choices a secret until we found out if it was a boy or girl. Once we did I let the fam know which we were having and our name.

My mother called me and drilled me about where it came from, why we chose it, etc., but I said this is your grandson...so you have until June to get used to his name! it didn't go over well, but I was not going to let them tell me what to name my child or hear more about it.

Some things you have to stand your ground on...and others...well pick your battles wisely!
