2nd Trimester

kick question

ok, I know this has been asked a thousand times, but my mother is constantly nagging and starting to make me nervous. I'll be 20 weeks on thursday and don't think I've felt him kick yet, but I have no idea what I am looking for. I've heard bubbles. yup had them , followed by gas and I've heard flutters, like butterflies, ok maybe I just haven't felt it but so far I don't think I've felt what butterflies in your stomach should feel like I guess....

A better question is when are the kicks regular, or when do you start doing kick counts? A book I'm reading said if you don't feel anything by week 20 call the dr. (didn't make me feel good) I had a u/s last week and can hear him on the doppler so I'm not worried. When can you feel him kick on the outside of your belly.

I'm sure this will be happening in the next few weeks but my mother insists that "I'm not paying attention" seriously, I have one of those mothers.

TIA

Re: kick question

  • I'm 15 weeks and I just felt mine this morning-it was a gentle "poking" sensation.  BUT, I do remember with my first that I didn't feel him doing much until later on-possibly after 20 weeks.  This baby is SUPER-active, not to mention that I had just done my doppler and it does not like it.
  • Loading the player...
  • What to expect says that you dont' start kick counts until 28 weeks as the baby's kicks aren't expected to be regular until then.

Have you had your big u/s yet?  You cuold have an anterior placenta which means your placenta attached to the front and therefore is cushoning all the kicks... the kicks have to be strong enough to get through the placenta/uterus/fat/skin before you can feel them.  It takes a lot longer to feel them if you have an anterior placenta.

I would mention it to your dr. the next time you're in and see if they have any idea but I really wouldn't be worried about it.   Nothing to run to emerg for or anything. Especially if you have heard the HB on the Dopplar recently.

  • I am in the same boat! I am at 19 weeks and haven't felt him move yet. We have been told that if it is the first pregnancy that it can be up to 22 weeks or so before actual kicks can be felt. I am hoping on Thursday when we visit the doc they can clear it up for me.

We keep hearing the heartbeat and such...so know nothing is wrong like that, but it still is a bit un-nerving!

  • see www.countthekicks.org for info on kick counts - they recommend 28 weeks for a normal pregnancy.

I didn't start feeling movement with this pregnancy until right around 20 weeks, but I have an anterior placenta.  I feel regular kicks quite often now.

  • I'm 26 weeks, and I didn't really KNOW that I was feeling little kicks til my 20 week u/s and the tech was pressing on my belly. Now i feel them all the time, but not regularly. You will begin to feel them soon enough, and I wouldn't worry too much about it. Big Smile
  • Kicks for me feel like just that.... little kicks from the inside, or nudges from the inside. I believe I "saw" a little kick this weekend, but not sure...

I really feel them when I'm laying down and being still.

  • I have a long way to go - but I can't wait to feel them!!
  • Thanks for the info ladies, I guess I'll just have to wait a little bit longer or "pay closer attention" as my mother would say.

    Thanks
