At what age did your DC start swim lessons?

MH thinks I am ridiculous for wanting Noah in swim lessons this summer at 2.5 years old.

Re: At what age did your DC start swim lessons?

  • We are starting the kids this month, they are 26m and 13m.

My girlfriend started her twins at 9m old, and they swim like fish now.

    I don't think you're ridiculous at all.

  • Not ridiculous at all! Colin started at 6 months with mommy and me.
  • 6 months. Granted at that age, it's not really "lessons" as much as just getting them used to the water. It's never too early to have them start learning!!
  • We started Ethan @ 8 months, so I don't think 2.5 is unreasonable at all.
  • My thoughts exactly.  Apparently it is just one of those days where everything I say/suggest is ridiculous.
  • My bro and sis started at ages 1 and 2. Esp since you live in a warm area, swim lessons are a great idea at 2.5 yrs. They don't learn to be full-time swimmers, but they learn a few skills and can get to the edge in an emergency. It also just makes them more comfortable in the water, they don't mind getting their faces wet, etc.

  • He was less than a year old, but I don't remember for sure- I think around 10 months? He loved swimming. We haven't done lessons in awhile but I definitely don't think 2.5 is too young.

  • We started parent/tot swim w/our oldest DD when she was about 9mos old.  We took a break at age 2.5 when the baby was born because she had started to not want to go.  We finally started her in actual lessons right before she turned 3 & while she liked the water before, she completely blossomed & really started learning how to swim.  At 4 now, she's in a class with 6-8 year olds.

From our experience w/#1, we decided to not to parent/tot w/DD#2 and instead we just go to the community pool with them both pretty frequently.  We do plan to start her in actual lessons when she is somewhere between 2 and 3.  I don't think you're off in your timing at all.  We boat, so it is really important to us that our kids are comfortable & safe in the water.

  • Ian started at 6 months.  Lila started at 9 months.  Neither have ever been scared of the water and Ian is now on the swim team.  I think the younger the better!
  • Definitely not to early.  I want to start DS this summer (he will be 2).  My parents started us at 2-3 and we all turned out to be very good swimmers and love the water.

  • I used to be a swim instructor all through college, and it is highly recommended to get your children in the pool/water as soon as possible! Now, the only thing ridiculous about it would be to expect that your child will swim on their own at 2.5 years old. At this age, it all about getting used to the water, and the basics of swimming (reach and pull, blowing bubbles, etc, etc). It's all about fun at this age, enjoy!
  • we started at 17 mos and by the end of 4 weeks dd was able to get into the pool and swim short distances by herself, like from me to the wall and back and was able to pull herself out of the water.
  • Where did you take them?  I can't find anywhere here in FL (not even YMCA) that does it before 5!

  • We live in the same area as you and DD started at 8 months, Now at 2.5 she can swim accross the pool come up for a breath and keep swimming. she can also jump/fall in and swim back to the side. We do the lessons year round at aqua kids, and go to the neighborhood pool everyday starting in April or May.
  • not ridiculous at all.  We had Olivia in them at 9 months and then again at 17 months.  We will put her in them again this summer when she is 2.5 too.

  • Swim lessons for both of them on and off since they were 6 mos old.  They love it!
  • Started both dd and ds at 4 months. ?It is ust getting them used to the water and not fear it. ?DD is now 3.5 and loves swimming and is doing great. ?2.5 is not too young at all.
  • DD took them when she was 8 months old or so. we did them all winter prior to the pool season since we have a pool. it's mostly getting them used to the water at that point but she loved them. we skipped this winter, but i think i'll put her in them again next winter so that hopefully she'll really start learning how to swim.
  • MS was 20 mo. when he took lessons last summer.
