I read the post below about a 5 day transfer and it got me wondering. My protocol is for a 3 , 5, or 6 day depending....on what I'm not sure. I'm sure that this is probably standard. Why do they choose one over another. And is one better news than the others? Thanks!

Re: Transfers 3 vs 5 vs 6 day
I think it depends on the clinic a lot - and there is conflicting info out there. Most studies cancel each other out such that I think the common belief is that there aren't higher success rates with either. The benefit of 5 day over 3 day is that as the embryos develop into blastocysts there is more information from watching them the extra 2 days to choose the very best. For what it's worth, my clinic is very well respected and has great success rates, and they do 90% 3 day transfers. I've done 2 fresh cycles with them, one 3 day and one 5 day, both successful. The second time we did a 5 day only because I specifically requested it since we were only transferring one embryo and I wanted to maximize choosing the very best.
?Good luck!?
Ditto schmoodle..
I haven't read much good info about success rates with either 3 or 5, but if someone has enough embies & they're growing, they might let them go to 5 day to pick the 'best' looking ones. If they don't have very many or for whatever other reason, they might choose to transfer at 3 days, b/c the thought is that they'll do better in your body than in a petri dish regardless.
It is hard though- my 2 'best' were transferred at 5 days (and ended in c/p) but at 6 days when they were looking at which to freeze, 2 made it to freeze (out of 5) and they ended up being graded better than the 2 that were transferred. Just did an FET with those 2 & am pg with twins.
I would just ask your dr a lot of questions about why they do what they do- they all have their own reasons, and most likely, they're all good ones.
My understanding as to why they waited for a 5 day is that they have a good amount of embryos still going so they wait a few extra days to pick the "best" ones who make it to the next stage. We could've still had excellent quality ones today but I'm guessing there were more than a couple doing well so they wanted to wait to see who makes it to the next stage. I think it's more of a numbers thing. If there were 2-3, I'm guessing I'd have my transfer today.
